Becoming a medical oncologist requires years of schooling and training so they can effectively treat patients. Attending medical school is the first step to becoming a medical oncologist. After graduating from school, they will usually enter residency training in which they will receive several years of advanced training.
After residency training, people who wish to enter this field must complete a fellowship program that generally consists of two or three years. During this time they will receive additional training and may conduct research in their field. Certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine is a requirement for becoming a licensed medical oncologist.
Even after training and achieving board certification, it is not uncommon for these physicians to conduct additional research and receive additional training so they can remain up to date on new treatments that are being developed. Doing so will ensure that they can provide the most effective care for their patients.
There are a variety of things to consider when choosing a medical oncologist. One of the most important qualifications is to find one that is board certified. It is also necessary to find a one that has plenty experience in treating cancer and that they are able to answer any questions when presented with them.
