In the United States, preventative dental care is important because healthy teeth are a must for many professional and personal endeavors. A great smile contributes to the professional look that employers desire in their employees, especially those who work in professional and advanced-level careers. In fact, the average cost that Americans pay for dental insurance and preventative dental care is more than the average paid in most industrialized nations.

Preventative Care in U.S. Schools
In American schools, kids are taught the importance of preventative dental care during their health education studies. Students are encouraged to brush at least twice each day, floss daily, and get dental exams at least once annually. However, American public schools do not offer any student dental insurance. Instead, parents must pay for dental premiums that cover most preventative services, such as cleanings and fillings. The cost of dental care can be expensive, especially for families that cannot afford insurance.

If a person does not adequately care for their teeth, they run the risk of problems such as dental caries or periodontal disease. Both of these conditions can lead to tooth decay and tooth loss. These conditions are also expensive to treat. Crowns, deep cleanings, bridges, root canals, and other restorative treatments can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars, even for patients covered under dental insurance.

Exams and Cleanings
During routine exams, a dentist or dental hygienist will check the teeth and gums for cavities, signs of infection, and other dental problems. It is also important to get a professional cleaning at least once yearly. A professional cleaning can remove plaque and tartar from hard to reach places that might be missed with a toothbrush. Cleanings and routine preventative dental services are often the work of a dental hygienist.

Dental Hygienist Career
Dental hygienists are professionals who help care for patients' teeth, clean teeth, and provide advice on both preventative and restorative dental care. Due to the overwhelming demand for dental care in the United States, the job outlook for hygienists is optimistic. Most hygienists receive a generous salary, and most are directly employed by dentists.

Improved Dental Care
According to reports by the surgeon general, the oral health of Americans has improved in the past few decades. This may be due in part to the promotion of preventative dental care in America. Healthy-looking teeth are attractive, but having healthy teeth isn't just about cosmetics. Good oral health is often a sign of good overall health, which is something that most Americans value.
