Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has always been considered an alternative medical treatment option. The theories and fundamental beliefs of TCM are very different from what is believed and used in modern Western medicine. That has placed it on the fringes of the medical world with many believing it could even be dangerous.

Over time, attitudes toward TCM have started to change. Many people are now turning to these alternative treatments when modern Western medicine fails to cure their illnesses or relieve symptoms that interfere with the quality of their lives. These people are bringing positive attention to traditional Chinese medicine and opening the minds of people who would otherwise be too fearful to give it a try.

Most people know that these treatments are not dangerous when taken with care and according to package instructions. Most people are not flying to China and rummaging through the natural environment to pick their own herbs or get authentic TCM treatments. They are taking pill forms derived of the proper herbs used in TCM for different medical conditions. They are completely safe when taken according to those package instructions.

The reason for so much skepticism surrounding TCM in the past is the basic theories and ideas behind the practice. There is a lot to learn and absorb when you first start learning about this type of medicine theory and none of it has to do with clinical trials and experimentation on mice.

The fact that traditional Chinese medicine still rests on less scientific methods of testing and treatment is what has placed it so firmly in the category of "alternative" medical treatment. Many will turn their nose up at the practice when they start learning about the basic principles, but others will look at the proven history of results for these medical treatments and give it a try.

Those who open their minds to TCM can enhance the effectiveness of their standard medical care. Most won't learn enough about the medical theory behind Chinese medicines to completely replace their Western medical treatment, but they will learn enough to choose the right Chinese supplements to enhance their Western medical treatment.

Using traditional Chinese medicine doesn't have to be limited to herbal treatments or teas. The practice also relies upon acupuncture and different forms of massage to heal and strengthen the body as well. These treatments have actually become so common that many would consider them mainstream today. Yet, they are important parts of traditional Chinese medicine that have been in practice for many generations.

It's true that TCM is quite different in theory and practice than the medical practices of the Western world today. While some people shy away from things that seem different or unknown, others have completely embraced Chinese medicine in its traditional form.

Many have embraced TCM for treatment of cancer and heart disease while others rest on Chinese herbal treatments or acupuncture and massage to help with depression, anxiety, and other mental conditions. Still others use traditional Chinese medicine to keep their body healthy, fight off minor colds and infections, and strengthen their immune systems.

There are many different ways to use TCM today. It is typically used in conjunction with standard Western medical treatment. It doesn't have to be an either-or decision anymore. While Chinese medicine is not exactly mainstream just yet, it is an excepted part of the medical community in most areas of the world.
