Common in every town in the US, from Pensacola, FL to Salem, OR, obstetricians treat women for a variety of issues involving the reproductive tract, prenatal pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period.
Becoming an obstetrician requires several years of training in the medical field. In the US, one must attend a four-year college or university, followed immediately by post-graduate or medical school. In addition to completing an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB/GYN) residency program, candidates must graduate from an approved medical school. Formal school training is key because one selects their specialization during those years.
Almost all modern obstetricians are also qualified gynecologists. Because the training required in becoming an obstetrician and gynecologist often overlaps, these doctors usually offer their expertise to all women, whether there is a pregnancy involved or not. Additionally, obstetricians are the primary doctors that treat tumors, which can be either benign or cancerous. To prevent fibroids or tumors from growing in the female reproductive system, women are advised from the time they begin menstrual cycles to see a doctor regularly. Regularly scheduled visits should be annual, depending on the result of the pelvic exam. The exam screens for cancer in the uterus, the cervix or the fallopian tubes.
These physicians often advise women regarding sexual intercourse regarding pregnancy and health issues, including STDs. OB/GYNs also offer medical advice regarding various methods of birth control. They also offer advice and alternative methods for those interested in pregnancy. When women pass their child-bearing years, they continue to need medical care from these specialists. An obstetrician's job is never done. Working as an obstetrician can be a matter of life and death for patients and their offspring. With proper training and an understanding of the patient-doctor relationship, obstetricians will continue to play an important role in women's health.
