Preparing a nutritious diet is fairly easy especially if you want to keep fit. Most health foods are readily available, whether you are an urbanite or living in the countryside. Diet management has to be cautious and sensible. Some people are good at the start, but they likely fail when boredom or laziness takes its toll. Here are a few hints that will help when you want to keep going.
1. Always keep yourself motivated. Whether you are doing something or just planning your next meal. Bring out the imaginative side of you even when you cook. Variety will keep you interested in sustaining a healthy diet.
2. Keep everything in moderation. When you taste something very pleasing to the taste buds, the tendency is for you to keep adding more of it to your plate. When you are drawn towards a certain dessert, for instance try to get small proportions. Keep in mind that sizes and amounts matter. Smaller plates will also help you put in little amounts of food. If you want to eat something salty, you may do that. Sharing it with a friend will help you keep it small.
3. Practice cooking for your own consumption. This way, you will be able to choose the ingredients you will be adding to your recipe. Knowing what you have placed into your food will at least, keep you feeling secure that it is something toxic-free and nutritious. You may teach your spouse or kids to cook to encourage them to be more mindful about what they are eating. Then you can take turns in the chore from time to time.
4. Remember the fruits, greens and other vegetables. And don't forget to shop them fresh. If you can buy them from a local farm the better. But you have to remember that they should be as much as possible, pesticide- free. Also include a variety of grains in your diet - whole wheat, brown rice, barley or millet.
5. Keep your focus on high-quality protein, like fresh tuna and mackerel, turkey, tofu, fresh eggs, beans or nuts. As much as possible buy meat that is free of hormones and antibiotics.
6. Don't forget your milk, cheese and yoghurt. They are your sources of Calcium, which is necessary for bones and teeth.
7. Limit your sugar and salt. These are the basic ingredients that many of the processed food contain. And much of our favorites have them. Should you crave for sweet food, turn to naturally sweet fruits. And avoid junk food which has much of the salt and preservative. If you can resist the craving, buy the smallest pack there is.
8. Always include water and exercise a great part of your diet. Digestion is hastened with enough amounts of water and exercise will always aid in the process.
It might not be easy at the start. But with gradual practice these are not as difficult as it seems. Always remember the basic 'eat smart' principle.
