We are more aware of health issues today than in times past. It is fascinating to note in Benjamin Franklin's era people generally thought bathing unhealthy. They believed washing the body stripped them layers of dirt and odor that was thought to stave of infections. They also thought fresh air unnecessary. Benjamin believed differently and was considered odd for his time.

The Black plague caused people to be wary of bathing. People were often stricken with the disease after using the bathhouse. The theory was advanced that bathing opened your pores and thus let in disease. Bathing became completely shunned. It was centuries later that bathing would slowing come back into vogue.

Ben slept with the window opened each night. He bathed on a regular basis. He may have been on to something as he lived productively for almost 85 years. He lived by a code of conduct including 13 virtues. He was much depressed when he wasn't able to perfect himself in all 13 areas in one year, a self-imposed allotted time frame. One of the thirteen virtues was cleanliness: tolerate no uncleanliness in body, clothes or habitation."

Cleanliness is known today as the precursor to many illnesses including the common cold and flu's. Hand washing, sanitizers, daily bathing, housecleaning, shower gels and soaps, shampoos, laundry detergent, dish detergent, toilet bowl cleaners, disinfectants are all a part of everyday households. Don't forget toothpaste, floss, water picks, electric toothbrushes and tongue cleaners. Your life today is much different then it was in Benjamin Franklin's time.

You understand microbiology, germ, although unseen cause illness. The mouth being the gateway to the body is where prevention starts. Brushing at least twice a day, six-month check ups with your dentist in Atlanta is crucial for overall good health. Tooth decay, abscesses, crocked teeth can lead to other health impairments. Your dentist can prevent these problems with brushing, dental development, flossing, fluorides, oral habits, orthodontics, proper diet, and sealants.

Benjamin Franklin was on to something. Cleanliness is the key to overall good health. It starts with good oral hygiene. It served him well for 85 years. He was the master inventor, the master electrician, the master politician, and the mastermind of many things. We are more aware of the link between hygiene and health with oral health leading the way.
