While natural disasters can bring out the courageous and giving side of some individuals, it can bring out of the worst in others. Your life has probably been turned upside down, and the stress of loss can be too much for some to comprehend and bear.

Many people will naturally turn on the people around them, as the disaster naturally puts them on the constant defensive. This can lead to violence to strangers and family members alike, and an increased risk for suicide.

Learning how to prevent this kind of violence can help you and your family members remain safe while you are trying to rebuild your home and your lives. If you are a parent, the stress can be nearly unbearable-not only do you have to deal with the stress of the destruction in your life, but you have to deal with emotions of your children as well.

Child abuse is common during these times, and even the best parents can lose their patience and fall apart under the strain. To prevent this from happening to you and your family, make sure that you strive to remain a loving and affectionate parent despite your level of stress.

It is important to continue to care for your children. Parent reactions have a strong effect upon children.

If your children are upset and crying, never shake them out of frustration. This can cause injury and death, and will not help the situation-simply as your partner for help if you begin to lose patience.

With the danger of the environment and strangers around you, you need to be more protective and defensive of your children than ever. The last thing you want is for them to fall into the wrong hands, because you are distracted with the state of your home.

Seek help from other parents, family, and close friends if you are under stress. Breaks are necessary when stress increases to a level where you may explode.

If you are having trouble with feeling overly stressed, try taking a workout break. Hop on an elliptical machine for a while, or go for a run if you can-this can help you to better cope with your life situations, while relieving stress.

Another kind of violence that can occur in traumatic, stressful situations is sexual violence. After a natural disaster, there is a general sense of chaos and pandemonium.

This can lead to dangerous people praying upon those who are distressed, distracted, and vulnerable. If you have lost your shelter, you have probably had to stay in a church or hospital full of strangers.

Make sure that you take the measures you need to in order to protect yourself. If you witness an attack, be sure to report it to the authorities right away.

Separate the person from their attacker if it is safe to do so, and make sure that you remember what the attacker looks like. You may need to be a witness in the future if the person is apprehended.

Do not go anywhere alone-be sure to stay with groups of family and friends so that you can remain safe. Stay in crowded places, and do not go to the wreckage of your home if there is no one else around.

Do not take an drugs or drink any alcohol-you do not want to consume any substances that will slow your reactions, or dull your common sense. You need to have your wits about you all times, so that your defenses are up.

Last but not least, many people feel very hopeless after loving their home, their friends, or even their family. This feeling is very natural, but can lead to very dangerous actions if you do not receive the necessary support to get through this difficult time.

Suicide prevention is very important for yourself, and for those around you. If possible, keep in touch with family, friends, and close neighbors to help you handle the stress and losses after a natural disaster.

If you are having thoughts of ending your life, make sure to seek help from family, doctors, and any leaders that may be there to help you. Try to stay as active as possible-the more distracted and busy you can stay, the better off you will be.

If you are careful to prevent these disasters, you can be sure that you will deal with the stress in a healthy way. As difficult as natural disasters can be to recover from, it is not impossible with the right attitude and help.
