What you eat can either trigger your Irritable Bowel Disease or prevent the symptoms of Functional Bowel Syndrome from taking place. You should therefore follow the so called Spastic Colon diet or a diet for IBS if you want to be usually free from constipation, having gas frequently, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and so on.
IBS is a condition of the large intestine wherein the food either moves too slow or too fast, leading to the discomfort and the pain, even frustrations, embarrassment, and irritability. Take note that no damage to the intestines is done, but the common symptoms can bring about life disruption e.g. always needing to go to the bathroom, being too careful about what to eat in restaurants, and the likes. Signs that you may have Irritable Bowel Disease or Functional Bowel Syndrome include: presence of mucus in your stools, seeming like you have diarrhea every after meals, or first thing when you wake up in the morning, bloating, etc.
Your Spastic Colon diet is one that requires you to avoid certain foods or at least cut back on their amounts so as to not make your symptoms worse or become triggered. Drinks with caffeine components, milk products, sugary foods, meals that are high in fat, are examples of foods and drinks that should not be included in your diet for IBS. There are also foods that may produce more gas in you which means that you have to limit them e.g. cabbage, beans, broccoli, even artificial sweeteners e.g. those candies or gums with xylitol and sorbitol.
It is a good idea to keep a food journal and observe and list down whichever foods or beverages trigger your Functional Bowel Syndrome symptoms. In this way, you can prevent yourself from eating those symptom triggering foods, or only eat small amounts of those foods. To have a more stable digestive process, you also have to take steps aside from following a Spastic Colon diet. For instance, you should not rush when you're eating, and you should eat about 6 smaller sized meals daily rather than eating 3 large meals per day.
Drinking from 6 up to 8 glasses of H20 (the plain variety) is also a must as water helps in proper digestion, aside from flushing out toxins in the body and controlling food cravings. Taking something that can relax the muscles in your intestines e.g. peppermint supplements or peppermint tea can also help people with Irritable Bowel Disease.
Remember that you need not sacrifice the quality of your life if you have IBS, as long as you eat a recommended diet for IBS. Aside from putting into practice a Spastic Colon diet, remember too that exercising regularly, following good eating techniques e.g. not rushing your food, are also important in fighting off the symptoms of Functional Bowel Syndrome.
