When I struggle with my weight, it usually is when my life seems out of control in other areas. Working may be getting the better of me or I may have a lot of things going on with my family. The bottom line is I feel overwhelmed and want to eat when I am not hungry...just so I can cope. I have a lot company when it comes to following this pattern of emotional eating. It is rampant throughout this country and many people do not even recognize that they have a problem with what is often termed emotional eating.
One of the best ways to fight emotional eating is to have balance in your life. This is probably going to harder to fix than you may think. You may want to keep a journal when you eat. Write about how you are feeling, how hungry you are, what you are eating and how much you are eating. Review this journal several times a week and look for the patterns. What else is going on around you when you are eating when you are not really hungry? Emotions are very powerful and can cause certain behaviors to go out of control. People used different things to deal with emotions. It can be shopping, gambling or any number of other things.
One of the things I have found that helps me keep these behaviors in check is balance. If I have things going on in my life that are causing me to feel overwhelmed, I am likely to have behaviors that are out of control. For me it is not about anger or boredom, it is things that stress me out that will cause me to eat things that lead to trouble. Once I get to this point, it is hard for me to control the behavior, but if I can do things that keep the stress level down, I stand a good chance of avoiding destructive behaviors.
If I can take my mind off of what is aggravating me, I can often get past it and will not binge. For me, the key is avoiding stress. There are several things you can do to avoid eating, but because this can be a compulsion it will take work to change overeating behaviors. You must have a positive way of dealing with emotions that can lead to negative behaviors, such as compulsive overeating or spending. Keeping balance in your life is the first step in managing compulsive behaviors.
