So you have had enough of being thin and skinny and has decided to do something to increase your weight to be more buff. So what can you do?

Actually it is very simple. In order to gain weight, all you need to do is to consume more calories than you burn for your physical activities everyday until you reach your desired weight. You can also speed up the process by training with weights to increase your muscle mass and thus becoming heavier faster.

Yes, some people have high metabolic rate and are naturally thin, however being underweight can be as a result from eating disorders, appetite loss or even underlying medical conditions. If you have a sudden loss of weight, you should see a doctor immediately to rule out any dangerous medical conditions such as cancers or tuberculosis amongst others.

Barring any medical conditions, you can start your weight gain program simply by eating more food at every meal or to eat more meals. I know this is a no brainer, but have you tried to eat more consistently instead of doing so for a week or so, then seeing no result went back to your regular portion?

You should choose foods that are nutrient-dense (high in calories) but do not eat more of unhealthy stuff like junk foods. Your aim is to gain weight healthily and safely. So choose nutrient-dense foods like legumes, vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. You should also increase your consumption of dairy products such as milk and cheese, lean meats, seafood and poultry.

The main aim is to increase your calorie consumption and thus it does not matter at all if you eat more meals or increase the portion of the meals you eat. For those of you who are uncomfortable eating more foods at any one time, then you can have more meals of your usual portion throughout the day.

Your meals should be balanced with the right amounts of protein, carbohydrates and healthy fat like omega-3 or olive oil. If you plan to augment your weight gain program with building muscles weight training, then you should eat more protein to spur your muscle growth.

After a few weeks of extra calorie eating and your weight still remains the same, you may wish to add even more calories by way of consuming weight gain supplement or you can ask your doctor to prescribe some appetite stimulant medicines to increase your appetite.

As said earlier, training with weights for muscle growth can also increase your weight because your muscle is heavier than your body fat. So the more muscle you have, the heavier you are and on top of that, you look great with good muscle tone.

Many people make the mistake of bodybuilding by concentrating on small muscles like your biceps, forearms or shoulder muscles (deltoids). This is because these muscles are more visible and can make you look more sexy. However for the purpose of building overall body musculature and to put on muscle mass and thus muscle weight fast, you should concentrate on heavy compound exercises like squats, deadlifts, bench press, dips and chin ups.

Compound exercises work more muscle groups and stimulate more muscle growth and at the same time, helps you to produce more testosterone and thus making your muscles grow even faster on your entire body.

There you have it. You can kiss your skinny frame goodbye and start to increase your weight safely and healthily.
