The better informed parents are, the easier it will be to prepare their children for their first trip to the dentist in Louisiana. Well prepared children will not be anxious. They will also understand a lot faster how important dental hygiene really is. Ideally, parents should take their children to the dentist as soon as the first baby teeth appear, or when their babies are celebrating their first birthday.

If you are a new parent, here are 7 tips you can use to ease the experience.

1. Find a dentist in Louisiana with pediatric experience - Not all dentists have the knowledge and patience to handle children. This can be devastating, causing stress and trauma. Avoid this by calling several dentists to find the one able to deal with young children. You can also go online to do a search for local dentists with pediatric skills, the tools, and a child-friendly environment that will make a toddler feel at ease during examinations and treatments.

2. Inform the dental office - When booking the appointment, tell the receptionist that this will be your child's first dental visit. Mention any concerns you have. The clerk or dental assistant can then give you tips and suggestions on possible solutions.

3. Carefully select the appointment time -Try to set up visits early in the morning when the child is fully awake and in a good mood. Kids will be cranky if you take them out during their scheduled nap times.

4. Explain the visit - It can be quite beneficial to tell the child what to expect when visiting a dentist in Louisiana. Describe the dentist office and some of the procedures. Talk about the special chair, the bright lights and the instruments. The dentist will wear gloves when touching the teeth and looking into the mouth. Demonstrating the actions during a roll playing exercise can certainly prevent a lot of surprises.

5. Educational preparations - There are several good books and online videos available that can enlighten a child about what to expect at a dentist office. Use them.

6. Take a favorite toy along - Holding a familiar toy can be quite comforting to a child. You can also bring a storybook and read to your son or daughter while waiting.

7. Do not leave - Stay with your child during the examination or treatment. Although the dentist in Louisiana is friendly and very careful, children like it when parents stick around. Hold the child's hand and praise it for being so brave. The more supportive you are, the less stressful the visit will be.
