You've just been in to see your dentist for you six month cleaning and check up and you find that you have some cavities that need to be taken care of. There is no need to fear. Dentistry has come a long way and there is no reason for you to experience a lot of pain to get your teeth fixed. Your franklin dentist has many options to offer you in treatments.

Is your tooth structure eroded under that crown? A bridge is not your only choice. Rather than your dentist removing the enamel from two good teeth to hang the bridge on, consider a tooth implant. Tooth implants are very widely used now, and insurance companies are paying for them much more readily since implants have proved to be reliable. They are longer lasting in the long term because metal cannot get cavities. The process from start to finish is about three to four months. First the implant is surgically placed under the gum and the gum tissue is allowed to heal. During this time the bone grows around the implant. When that procedure is complete the crowning process can begin.

Does the dentist's drill make you nervous? Your franklin dentist may offer laser dentistry. In laser dentistry, no drill is used. A drill removes everything in its path, but a laser more easily removes the decayed parts of tooth than the healthy, so more of the healthy tooth remains. The laser uses energized water to remove the decay and since the tooth is not heated up in the process, there will be less sensitivity to hot and cold after the treatment. A drill can also cause tiny little cracks in the tooth structure, weakening it.

The laser does not cause any cracking of the tooth. It is more comfortable for the patient because there is no vibration or whine from the drill. In laser dentistry there is no need for shots, so multiple areas of the mouth can be worked on at once. If you need oral or gum surgery, laser causes less bleeding, swelling, and virtually no infection. If you have a gum disease that needs treatment, there is no need for shots, scalpels, or stitches.

There is also the option of sedation dentistry. Your dentist gives you a little pill, and you have almost no memory of the procedure, smells, or discomfort. You will typically snooze for up to five or six hours, depending on the length of time required for your treatment. A complex dental process that may traditionally take several visits can be done in one.
