The symptoms and treatments of sleep apnea may be different than you think they are. All of the commercials that you hear or see tend to make you think that snoring is the one sure sign of this disorder, when there are others.

If you wake up in the morning are you have a headache, or you are still tired after a good eight hours of sleeping. You may even feel tired during the day and you do not know why, you may blame it not getting a good night slumber, or worrying about your bills or some family problems.

Other signs are having a feeling of irritability in the mornings when you wake up, or not being able to concentrate and having poor judgment on easy tasks. You may even feel sick, have some memory loss, and get high blood pressure.

By far though, the thing partners complain about most is the snoring. This may be bad for them but for you it is much worse. Your breathing is actually being interrupted. OSA is obstructive sleep apnea that happens when the airway collapses and prevents air from getting to your lungs. This is also the most common form of the disorder and it does occur more in men than in women.

The causes for the airway to collapse could be large tonsils, a decrease in the muscles that hold the airway open, or your tongue falls towards the back of your throat and closes off your airway. The risks for having this is greatly increased if you are overweight, if you smoke, or if you have diabetes.

You need to have an overnight study in order to find out if you do have this disorder, this test will records the measurements of your breathing at the different slumber stages over the course of one night. You will have to attend a clinic that specializes in this you will have your own room that even has a television. After you are settled in, the technician will hook you up to the equipment that will monitor you.

Once you are diagnosed with sleep apnea you will most likely be given CPAP treatment. This is "continuous positive airway pressure", and is created by a device that keeps the airway open by a flow of constant pressurized air into the throat. This is normally done by means of a mask that is worn over the mouth and nose during sleep.

The mask is connected to the CPAP machine with a tube. It is the machine that that forces pressurized air into your throat, the plastic or gel mask is used to make sure that your nose and mouth are covered. Some devices come with a place where you can put water to make sure that you receive humidified air as you snooze.

If you are also losing too much oxygen at night, you will most likely have to have an oxygen machine hooked up directly to the other device, so that you receive the correct amount of air to give you a good night of shuteye, and possibly help prevent problems other that sleep apnea.

Author Resource:- In Canada, Toronto CPAP are widely available in all provinces. Funding for the therapy varies from province to province of Ontario, the Ministry of Health`s Assistive Devices Program will fund a portion of the cost of a CPAP Toronto and CPAP Masks Toronto unit.
