When someone has astigmatism, they could have three different types. They may have a light case, where the condition is unnoticed, or they may have a mild or severe case. Depending on the severity of the condition will impact the type of treatment that is used. Understanding astigmatism will help someone determine what type they have and what treatment they would like to use.

In normal vision, a person will have a cornea that is flat and smooth. The cornea will have a perfect shape that matches that of the eye. People who have astigmatism do not have a perfectly shaped cornea, in fact, the shape is irregular. The irregularity can often cause blurred vision in some people. The amount of astigmatism that is found in the eye, will impact how someone sees.

In many cases, when there is a large amount of astigmatism in the eye, it was something that a person was born with. Severe cases are often seen in kids and even babies. A small amount of the irregular cornea can sometimes go unnoticed by someone who sees perfectly fine. Mild cases can be corrected by wearing glasses to neutralize the irregular shape.

When the condition is able to run in the normal direction of the eye, it can be helped with corrective glasses. The lens do not have to be thick, but can be thin and fashionable. Wearing the glasses will help someone to see in a clear way. The prescription is used to treat the irregular shaped eye.

In a severe case of astigmatism, the eye may have to be reshaped using adaptive devices. Hard lens may be used over the eye to treat the area. In some cases, a person may receive a donation of real human tissue that is used to reshape the eye.

A toric lens may be placed over the eye at the back to correct the vision. People may get this surgical procedure when wearing glasses does not help to improve the eye sight. The operation may take a few hours to complete and people may be left with a recovery time.

Some people will not notice their condition when they are young kids. As they merge into adulthood, they may notice that their vision is not as clear as it used to be. Some people will notice it at night when they are driving or in the clarity of distant objects. Discovering that someone has the condition later in life, may be a sign that it is a mild or light case.

When someone is understanding astigmatism, it could help them to figure out what it means and what it means for their eye shape. The more that is learned about the condition, the more that can be done to correct it. When glasses will not help to rectify the issue, people can turn to operations and adaptive devices to help. This condition can be found in kids and in adults, an irregular shaped eye that is severe may be present at birth. People who have an abnormal shaped cornea will learn about it from their eye doctor.
