An air purifier is a great way to clean up the air in your bedroom. Clean air will make it more conducive for relaxation and sleep. Not all air cleaners are equal however, and the following 6 features are ones you should avoid if you are searching for an effective cleaner.

High Noise Level-The bedroom of all places should be a haven-are place that can be as quiet as you like it. Having a purifier with a noisy motor can not only prevent you from sleeping, but can keep you from hearing the television, music, and phone calls.

Opt for a cleaner that is whisper quiet and can run quietly and effectively regardless of where you are in your room or what you're doing.

Power Hog---In order to get the most bang for your buck, make sure that cleaning the air won't cause you to go broke because of the electricity it takes to run it. A perfectly efficient purifier should be able to run on pennies a day for almost a little as it costs to burn a 60 watt light bulb.

No HEPA---Look at the technical specifications for the unit. If it doesn't have a high efficiency particle arresting (or HEPA) filter, leave it where it is. This type of filter is crucial in a bedroom room to scrub allergens from the air.

Some of the most potent allergens are common household particles such as household dust, pet dander, mold and mildew spores, bacteria and viruses. The dust mite is most prolific in the bedroom and a HEPA can remove this and other microscopic allergens that those who are allergic or asthmatic react to but cannot see.

No Carbon-This type of filter is best at removing gaseous pollutants such as odors and chemicals. A cleaner in the bedroom needs to be able to remove these types of pollutants as well. And having filters for particles as well as a carbon filter allows your purifier to multi- task, and saves you from having to buy multiple cleaners to get the air clean.

Harmful By-Products---Avoid any cleaner that produces any amount of ozone. These include ozone and ionizing purifiers. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has determined that any amount of ozone is unhealthy. And studies have shown that in order for ozone to be effective at removing pollutants the level in the air would be deadly. The only by-product should be fresh, clean air that is virtually free of pollutants.

Plastic---Your unit should be able to operate 24 hours a day; that way pollutants are never allowed to build to an unhealthy level. With the motor running continually the heat often causes plastic casing to off-gas noxious fumes. Steel is a better choice because it will not send fumes into the air because of motor heat.
