Marijuana is legal to be used for medical treatment for many health conditions. Patients, who have been diagnosed with any of the crippling diseases which have been approved for the use of medical marijuana, are legally protected. Some of the conditions most generally covered are: Arthritis, Anxiety, Cancer, AIDS or HIV, Glaucoma, Migraines, Multiple Sclerosis, and Chronic Pain sufferers.

Guidelines have been set for the amount patients can possess and cultivate. Patients and caregivers can register with the state and are issued a state ID card. This card helps in offering immunity from being arrested. Many police officials will not allow recommendations by physicians that were issued more than a year ago.

In order to make sure caregivers and patients remain clear from being arrested or prosecuted, it is recommended they keep the amount in their possession to under the amount allowed. This amount is 6 mature plants or 12 immature plants and up to 8 ounces of dried bud. Amounts above these may be possessed, with prior authorization from the city or county, and with a letter from the physician stating the need for larger amounts will be necessary.

Although the law allows patients the right to grow their own medicine, some problems may arise if in rented housing and the owner of the property does not approve or allow the plants to be grown and cultivated. There are a few cities which have ordinances in place which forbid the growing of plants or gardens in the outdoors.

As of May 31, 2011 there are approximately over 750,000 users of marijuana for medical use in this state. Because it is not a requirement for patients to register in California, the exact number of users is unknown. In order to be considered legal, the patients just need the recommendation from their doctor stating the need for it.

In the 14 US states that it has been legalized, the number of teenagers using, vehicular fatalities, and injuries in the workplace are all down since the legalization took effect. Due to California having the law in place longer than other states, the amount of users is more likely to a higher number. According to information stated in the Attorney General Study of Student Drug Use in California, the use of marijuana in the schools of California has greatly decreased since the law was passed.

The popularity of using can be rationalized by the low level of toxicity, satisfying effects, and expansive therapeutic applications. Foremost is the use to help control chronic pain. Patients that use it for easing their pain have reported a great reduction in the need of other pain medications.

There are specific treatments centers in California which specialize in helping to provide the recommendations needed to get medical marijuana, plans for treatment, assisting in getting registered for the state issued ID cards, and support for all medical needs for patients in a supportive and safe environment. These medical professionals are committed to maintaining excellent care and service. Most treatment centers also offer an Attorney Protection Program to assist you in any legal matters.
