Practice management software is an umbrella term for the category of computer software that a medical practice would use for day-to-day tasks and operations. For example, if you were a receptionist at a dentists office, you would become very familiar with the type of practice management software that your particular office uses. This software is what the receptionist will fill in with your name, date of birth, and insurance information. It is the software that will help them schedule the appointments for the whole office, as well as keep track of your recent visits. This software also keeps track of your insurance information, performs certain billing tasks such as printing receipts or insurance claims, and can generate reports used for office management.
I do not know about you, but I hate getting to an appointment and then having to sit down with a clipboard and fill out paperwork that asks me my medical history and my family's medical history, my last doctor's visit, and other information that I cannot recall off the top of my head. Then, with the paperwork, someone has to either keep track of that sheet of paper, or they have to type all that information into their computer using their practice management software. It seems like there is an easier and more efficient way to accomplish these tasks.
In fact, the administrative paperwork that goes on in medical offices and hospitals generates a huge cost for the health care industry. If we want to lower the exponentially increasing costs of health care, this is a great place to start. With the technology that we have today, the solutions to repetitive and redundant accumulation of patient information and insurance claims are right around the corner.
First of all, what if medical offices e-mailed you the questionnaires that they would otherwise hand you in their office for you to fill out at home, before your appointment? That way you would have more access to the information they are asking for, like the complicated names of the prescription drugs you are taking. It would also make it easier for the secretaries to compile your information.
Or, what if clients created profiles, akin to Facebook, where they can keep records of their family's medical history, their own past history, drugs that are prescribed to them, their insurance information, and other important medical information. Then there could be a way to allow their health care providers to view that information. That way, patients would not have to fill out the same information every time they enter a new clinic.
There are companies out there that are creating ways to improve practice management software and reduce the costs of the administrative paperwork of health care.
