Many experts have the belief that obstructive sleep apnea is a root brain condition, in which the nerves responsible for controlling the soft palate and tongue fail to stimulate the muscles, which may lead to their over-relaxation, thus the airway obstruction. Some experiments used pacemakers and anything equivalent to program the detection of breathing effort. This will then gently stimulate the muscles of the tongue electrically.

Neurostimulation is a not a common method of treatment for individuals who are afflicted with obstructive sleep apnea, but is just an acitve research field.

Neurostimulation for obstructive sleep apnea is given to a patient to treat the effects of the sleep disorder through modulation of autonomic nervous activity. Giving neurostimulation at specific locations can regulate the nervous activity, countering the sleep apnea effects. In some cases, neurostimulation for obstructive sleep apnea is given through the spinal cord of the patient by implanting an electrode. In other cases, neurostimulation is delivered to the spinal cord or to other locations in the body of the patient via electrodes placed on or over the body of the patient.

Because of obstructive sleep apnea, snoring due to airway blockage may happen many times during the night. Briefly waking up because of sleep apnea wakes up the sympathetic nervous system, which may increase heart rate and blood pressure a bit. Eventually, chronic episodes of sleep apnea and arousal may result to diseases such as ischemic heart disease, stroke, crdiac arrhythmias, systemic and pulmonary hypertension. Furthermore, sleep apnea episodes and the arousal from it may increase daytime fatigue and drowsiness.

This is why obstructive sleep apnea should be treated right away. Using neurostimulation for obstructive sleep apnea may modulate or regulate the autonomic nervous activity, keeping the muscles of the tongue awake to keep it from blocking the airway.

An implanted medical device like a pulse generator may give neurostimulation for obstructive sleep apnea and arousal. This will determine when the patient is asleep and will gently nudge his autonomic nervous system once it detects relaxation.

Neurostimulation is just an ongoing experiment to cure sleep apnea. There are natural ways on the other hand, to treat this sleep disorder. It is very important for you to treat sleep apnea upon diagnosis. The goal in curing this sleep disorder is to restore regular breathing, and by doing this, you can reduce daytime sleepiness or fatigue or loud snoring during the night.

If you adapt behavioral changes and apply natural cures to treat sleep apnea such as regular weight loss exercise and healthy diet, you may also be able to reduce your risk of acquiring other diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and diabetes. You can cure obstructive sleep apnea through natural means and alternative methods. But it is also best to consult your doctor or sleep therapist first. He should be able to understand the nature of your sleep apnea. If it is because of obesity, he may recommend work outs during the day. Discipline yourself and avoid alcohol and other sedatives because this may only make your tongue muscles to relax during bedtime, thus the higher possibility of it blocking your airways. Neurostimulation for obstructive apnea may be effective, but it is best to lead a healthy lifestyle on your own to avoid other sleeping disorders and other diseases as well.
