A plastic surgeon is a doctor who specializes in surgical procedures that can enhance a person's overall appearance and improve their self-esteem. These types of procedures can be performed either for purely cosmetic reasons or they can be performed to repair or reconstruct damaged tissue. Plastic surgeons in Georgia and other locations throughout the world commonly perform cosmetic or reconstructive surgery on many parts of the body including breasts, face, hands, arms, nose and body.
Common Plastic Surgery Procedures
*Liposuction
Liposuction is a procedure that removes excess fat from the body via a suctioning technique, and it creates a slimmer look on the area of the body that it is performed on. While it can be used to remove body fat from virtually anywhere on the body, it is usually conducted on the hips, thighs, arms, buttocks, back, face and neck. A thin tube, or cannula, is placed into a specific area of the body, which then suctions out fat through a vacuuming device.
*Breast Augmentation and Reconstruction
Breast augmentation is a surgery that can enhance the size of women's breasts through implants. When undergoing such a procedure, the two types of implants that are usually used are either saline or silicone. Each type has their own benefits and only a board certified plastic surgeon can help a woman decide which implants to use. Breast reconstruction surgery is performed on women who have had a mastectomy, and can help restore breast tissue to normal shape, size and appearance.
*Rhinoplasty
A further plastic surgery procedure is rhinoplasty, or nose surgery. This surgery can change either the shape or contour of the nose, lengthen or shorten the nose, slim the nostrils, or change the tip of the nose. Depending on which type of surgery a person has on their nose, a plastic surgeon can alter nose cartilage, bone or both.
*Rhytidectomy
A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is another surgery that they can perform. This is a procedure that is intended to remedy the wrinkles and sagging skin that occur as a result of aging. A facelift can significantly tighten the skin by pulling it tighter, which will reduce any sagging or wrinkling of the skin.
How to Choose a Plastic Surgeon
As with any type of surgery, plastic surgery poses serious risks and it should only be performed by a plastic surgeon that has been certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. When meeting with a plastic surgeon, it may be helpful to request before and after pictures of other patients they have worked on in the past, so their quality of work can be seen. A person should feel comfortable speaking with their plastic surgeon and they should be able to accurately and easily answer any questions a potential patient may have.
