Exercising outside during the winter may not seem like an option if you have an infant to take care of. Often bad weather and the cold keep people trapped indoors until the sun begins to emerge in the spring.
Just because you are stuck indoors, it does not mean that you have to stop exercising. There are many ways to exercise effectively indoors.
For example, if you are used to running outside, you can run on a treadmill indoors during the winter. If you do not have a treadmill, you will want to be careful to read lots of treadmill reviews online to make sure that the one you are considering purchasing is really the one that you want.
You will also want to be careful to make sure that you are purchasing one with all of the features that you want. Some of the features that you may want to include may be a heart rate monitor, pre-programmed fitness routines, and so forth.
Of course, if you want more of a challenge than simply running on flat ground, you may want to invest in an incline trainer. Or if you are not a runner at heart, there are many other pieces of exercise equipment that you may want to try out.
Working out indoors on fitness equipment can be a safe way to watch your children while you exercise. It will show your children how important working out is to you as well.
As a result, they may be more likely to work out in the future. However, the winter cold does not have to keep you exercising indoors, even if you have an infant.
You will have to take some extra pre-cautions to make sure that you keep yourself and your baby warm, but you can still enjoy working out outside. The National Safety Council has stated that it is okay to venture outside for some more activity when it is 20 degrees Fahrenheit or above and when the wind is not blowing too hard.
In fact, the cold is not your biggest enemy when it comes to exercising outside. The wind is really your biggest threat because of the chill factor that it provides.
Keep in mind that some activities add to the wind as you do them. Running, skiing, and biking are only a few of the common activities that to the wind when you do them.
As a result, the National Safety Council says that it is okay to go out as long as it is above zero, and as long as the wind does not make it feel like it is twenty below. Of course, you may want to wait until it is a little bit warmer to take your baby outside.
Many daycares have a rule that they will not let the children go outside if it is 25 degrees Fahrenheit or below. You may want to develop a similar rule of your own.
Of course you will want to dress appropriately for the weather that you are going out in. If you are working out intensely, you will want to wear clothing that is appropriate for weather that is 20 degrees warmer than it is.
However, you will want to dress your baby in clothing that is appropriate for the temperature that it actually is. In both cases, it is a good idea to wear layers in case the weather changes for better or worse.
The top layers should resist wind and water. In addition, you and your baby should wear a hat and gloves.
You should also wear clothing that is breathable because you will probably start sweating. Snow pants or suits are also a good idea for babies.
Even though it is often overcast in the winter, the sun is still there and it can still damage your skin and your baby's relatively new skin. You will want to make sure that you protect the skin with sunscreen of at least an SPF of 15.
If the sun does come out, it is also a good idea to protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses, particularly if there is snow on the ground because it can be quite bright. It is also a good idea to work out during the day when you can easily see where there is ice and other winter dangers.
However, if you decide to work out at night, make sure you wear reflective gear and that you take a route that you know well. It is important to keep safety as your number one priority when you are exercising with your baby in the winter weather.
