Have you been looking for a drug to help you deal with your inability to sleep at night? A good eight hours of sleep is very important and the idea of popping a pill to make it easier to sleep is very tempting. But before you go to the doctor or pharmacy, why don't you consider the use of natural sleep aids to give you the eight hours of sleep you need every night?

Why use natural sleep aids?

Pharmaceutical companies nowadays sell a lot of pills that affect the chemicals in your brain and help you to sleep, however some of these chemicals might not be entirely safe. It might certainly be safer to try more natural remedies. These remedies have been in use for centuries already by countless experts in traditional medicine and so you can have a bit more reassurance as to their effectiveness and safety.

What are some examples of these sleep aids?

Valerian is a very popular herb nowadays and is even sold over-the-counter in many European countries. For centuries, valerian has been accepted as a cure for chronic insomnia. If you happen to have valerian root available in your local pharmacy or traditional medicine specialist stores, then you could try this sleep aid out. In studies, it is believed that valerian functions in almost the same way as how newer sleeping pills like ambien function.

Another advantage to choosing to use valerian is that it is not believed to be an addictive medicine. In the mornings, you'll feel refreshed and ready for the day's work. There is a chance, though that valerian's sleep-inducing properties might not work for you. So if you find that it doesn't, you should probably move on to the next available sleep aid.

There are other natural substances that could be taken in to help you with your sleep. One of these is melatonin, which is something that is actually produced by your body. You could take melatonin pills less than an hour before you are scheduled to sleep and you may expect to have an insomnia-free night.

Acupuncture and massage as sleep aids

Acupuncture has also been claimed to help in curing people of their insomnia. If you have an acupuncture clinic with a licensed acupuncture expert nearby, why not schedule a visit? Tell the expert of your insomnia and ask him or her for an acupuncture session that could help you calm your nerves and relax at night.

An inability to sleep can often be caused by a person suffering from too much stress. Perhaps all that you'll need to aid you in your quest to sleep is a visit to your local masseur. Through massage therapy, the body's stress is given relief and so at nighttime, when you get to bed, you would have a perfectly relaxed body just ready to sleep and recharge.

There are many ways to free yourself of insomnia. Before taking in those chemicals that the companies try to sell you, why not venture to exhaust all the available natural sleep aids first?
