If you would like to keep your kids active and healthy in the summer, instead of being parked in front of the TV or computer, you need to help them come up with fun, active ways to spend their time outdoors. Keeping them participating in activities that involve both exercise and fun will help them to stay healthy and busy during their time off school.
The more you participate with them, the more likely they are to want to participate and have fun. There are a few things to consider when it comes to planning and choosing your activities.
One of the best parts about exercise is that it does not have to be expensive. You can find inexpensive ways to stay in shape just about everywhere you look.
Everything from playing basketball together, roller-skating in the park, going on a nature walk, riding bikes on a beach path, or playing a little bit of tennis is a great way to work out, for little to no cost at all. If you cannot afford ski lessons in the winter, take them sledding on plastic bags, or garbage can lids-there are plenty of ways to exercise your heart without paying a dime.
Anything can become fun and exercise at the same time if you have the right attitude. Even raking piles of leaves and jumping in them can get your kid's hearts pumping, while they laugh at the same time.
Be creative with your activities, and you may find that you are getting work done while having a blast at the same time. Make sure that you are in family friendly environments when you have the kids with you.
Keep them in places that are appropriate, where they will not be exposed to bad language or behavior. This will keep your time much more enjoyable.
Remember that every member of your family needs to feel successful at whatever activities your family chooses. They do not all have to be good at the activity as long as they enjoy it, and feel good about themselves doing it.
Allowing your activities to become too competitive can isolate certain members of your family. Keep everything fun and simple, and make sure everyone is able to participate in the activity in some way.
Your kids will remember and treasure family camping trips, going swimming together, and having family snowball fights. You are building good health habits, and good childhood memories at the same time-could there be a better combination?
Bonding as a family can be as simple as working out together, and staying healthy and fit. If your kids are skeptical about working out together at first, try tricking them into it-walk to the grocery store instead of driving.
You can play eye-spy along the way, to keep them distracted while they walk. If you drive, try parking in the farthest spot of the parking lot, and racing your way in, as long as there are not any dangerous cars around.
Walk with your kids to school each morning, and make a little breakfast sandwich that you can eat together on the way. Tell them stories about their ancestors, or tell them interesting facts about the flowers, trees, or animals that you see along the way.
Exercising does not have to be boring, or tedious to your children. Something as simple as playing tag in the backyard with them can help them to get great cardiovascular exercise.
The key is to participate in the activities with them, so that you are moving in a healthy direction as a family. Even tickle fights and fun wrestling matches can become exercise without them even knowing it.
Your children do not have to park themselves in front of the constant stream of television, movies, video games, and other forms of entertainment during their summer months off of school. Trick them into having fun with you and working out at the same time by having a good attitude and using a little creativity.
Think of different ways that you can exercise and stay healthy, starting right away. Today is the perfect day to go on a nature walk, go boogey boarding at the beach, or even play some Frisbee at the park!
