There are many things that you should prepare for before abdominal surgery. One of the things that you should prepare for is recovery.

After you have scheduled the date for a needed abdominal surgery, there are several things you will want to make sure you do before that date arrives. By preparing ahead of time, you will be able to minimize the number of things that you will have to do when you are recovering.

In addition, by lowering the stress that you will be under during this time, you may be able to speed up your recovery. One of the things that you will probably want to do is make sure that you have plenty of activities that you can do which will not stress your injuries.

While it may be a relief to be free from the numerous tasks that you normally complete every day, such as work, it can become quite boring to simply sit there and recover after a few days. It will be important that you have planned out several different things that you can do until you have fully healed.

For example, you may want to have rented a stack of movies that you are interested in or checked out a stack of books from the library. If you like to knit, you may want to have a new roll of yarn and a new project planned.

You do not want to decide that you want to do these things after the surgery and have to run to the store for the supplies. Instead, it is generally much better to be over prepared by having the things to do on hand, even if you do not end up doing them.

Following the operation, you will probably be tired, sore, and you may have a short attention span because of the painkillers. This can be a great time to work on some of your favorite hobbies.

Studies have shown that people who are relaxed, content, and un-stressed tend to recover faster than those who are not content and stressed. More likely than not, the doctor will encourage you to get out of bed fairly soon following the surgery.

It is important that you follow the advice of your doctor so that you can reduce the risk for various complications and so that you will heal properly. This particular piece of advice may hurt, but it is important.

By walking around, you will be able to get your circulation going and it will speed your recovery. In addition, walking can also help your digestive system get going again.

This will help you leave behind the liquid diet sooner rather than later. After a few liquid meals, it can be quite a relief to enjoy real food or a full, delicious meal.

However, do not eat solid foods until your doctor tells you that it will be okay. Otherwise, you may suffer from various complications.

If you leave the hospital to recover at home, you should not do any lifting, housecleaning, or vacuuming. These things can cause physical stress which my hinder your recovery.

Try to make sure that all of these things are done before you go to the hospital. There will probably still be times when you will want to do a few of these things, but it is important that you take proper care of yourself following the operation.

Most doctors will generally tell you that you should not lift anything that weighs more than five pounds. Unfortunately for many parents, this means that you should not lift children, pets, grocery bags, or laundry baskets as well as many other everyday items.

It can be very tempting to do these things anyway, but it is important that you do not. While the vacuum is on the floor the effort it takes to move it often uses the abdominal muscles.

This simple act can put stress on your stomach muscles that will hinder your full recovery. However, with your doctor's permission, it is usually recommended that you begin to participate in light exercise when possible.

In the beginning, this will probably only mean walking. Walking may be surprisingly tiring following your surgery.

However, as you heal, you should be able to do more and more. Although you should avoid wearing yourself out from it, you will want to build up strength slowly.

Another thing that you should consider having around is extra pillows. To help relieve discomfort during the recovery process, you may want to lie on your side with a pillow between your knees.

Another one pressing against your stomach can provide a nice pressure that may relieve some of the pain and help you feel more comfortable so that you can sleep better. The extra pillows can also be used to prop yourself up when you do not feel like lying down completely, but when you want to relax.

It is also a good idea to consider asking someone to be around who will be able to help you with various household tasks, such as running to the grocery store. Their help and company can be a tremendous comfort as you strive to recover.
