There are many things that you should prepare for when you are planning on getting abdominal surgery. Following the surgery, you may face a lengthy recovery time during which you will want to be prepared so that you do not have to run out for groceries more than is necessary.
The first thing you will want to do when you know that you have a scheduled abdominal surgery appointment is make sure that your insurance company is aware of it and that you understand exactly what costs they will cover.
Your insurance company may require you to get preauthorization for particular items, such as hospitalization. If you forget to notify them beforehand or if you call while at the hospital, they may refuse to cover the operation.
As hospital procedures are often very expensive, it is very important that you make sure that you are covered before you earn the bills, or you may be paying them out of pocket. This could be devastating to your budget and it may create financial difficulties for your family.
The second thing you will want to do is make sure that your employer understands what is going on. You do not want to be out of the office recovering for a couple of weeks only to return to find out that you have been fired and no longer have a job because your boss did not know what happened to you.
Let your boss know your circumstances, why you need the procedure, and when the procedure is planned as soon as you have a definite date. This gives your boss enough time to prepare and to cover your position for the time that you will be gone.
It also will give you enough time to plan out what needs to be done before you undergo the surgery so that someone else can cover for you. In some cases you may even be eligible for a short-term disability plan through your employer.
This will give you more leave if you have complications and need a lengthy amount of time to recover fully. Of course, you may need to prove your circumstances to your employer.
Do not be offended if your employer asks for a doctor's note verifying your condition as other people may have tried to leave on vacation under a faulty excuse in the past. If you are uncomfortable with telling your boss why you need surgery, you can simply say that you need it and then give him or her a doctor's note stating that the surgery is necessary.
You do not have to tell your boss what kind of procedure you are undergoing. Instead, you can simply explain that it is necessary and detail how long you will be gone.
Keep in mind that you may need another doctor's note for when you return to work stating that you have recovered fully and can reassume your full responsibilities. If you want to return to partial responsibilities when you are not fully recovered, you may also be able to work this out with your boss and your doctor.
It is quite common for patient's to forget to ask their doctor for this note when they are considered to be fully healed. However, it can be a hassle to go back to the office for one.
Do not forget to ask for a note while you are there, just in case you need it, before you leave the office. As you will probably not stay in the hospital until you have completely recovered, you will want to make sure that your home is properly set up to accommodate your recovery before your scheduled appointment.
This means that you will probably want to make sure that your refrigerator and freezer are stocked with foods that you will be able to eat and enjoy following the operation. For an abdominal related procedure, you will probably want to make sure you have a variety of soft, low-residue food items to ensure that you do not overtax your recovering digestive system.
In addition, it is simply much nicer to have all of the laundry and dishes done as well as the house clean overall. You do not want to feel guilty about not being able to clean as you recover.
Even worse, you do not want to try to clean when you are supposed to be recovering as this may result in complications. Try to plan ahead and think of all the items that you will want when you return home and recover on your bed or on your couch.
You will want to take as few trips up and down the stairs as possible. In addition, simply try to take care of any other stresses that may weigh on your mind.
For example, you may want to make sure that you have paid all of your bills and taken care of any other obligations. A lower level of stress can speed your recovery.
