Contact lenses can be a good solution for the fashion-conscious individual. There are colored ones that offer new iris colors which range from the natural to the fantastic. There are designer ones that can change the overall appearance of the eye so that it resembles a cat's or a tiger's. These are remarkable advances, but must be used responsibly, or else health can be impaired. It is important to understand how to take care of the contact lenses.

Responsibility starts with making the right choice of product. Each type available suits different needs for different individuals. Where the different designs and colors are desirable and exciting, the different kinds protect eyes against possible dangers.

There are soft and hard lenses. The soft kind are more comfortable. They are also more permeable, which means that air and water can flow through them. This is good, because the eye needs oxygen and moisture. However, there is a drawback.. More irritants can get through as well. Hard lenses block more of the substances that can irritate eyes, like soaps. Hard types are also more durable, while the soft kind can tear easily.

These visual aids also differ in how a person wears them. Daily disposables are easy to care for, because they do not need to be cleaned or stored. This option benefits those who live life at a fast pace. However, this kind is expensive. A less expensive solution is extended disposables, which can be worn for a month at at time. This works well for a traveler, or for those who wish to keep their spending down.

When the purchase is complete, it is time to consider how to prepare to properly insert them. The hands must be washed. It is important to use a soap that does not include any oil, lotion, or perfume amongst its ingredients. Then, hands should be scrubbed and then rinsed thoroughly. Finally, they are dried on a towel that is free of lint. These precautions are necessary, because the tiniest residue or debris will be very painful if it touches the eye. Since fingers manipulate the lenses and come so near the eye, it is wise to cut fingernails short.

Proper care must also include proper cleaning. To accomplish this each lens is removed singularly. Otherwise, they may adhere to one another or the wearer may drop and lose one of them. The singular lens is placed in the palm of one hand. A couple of drops of cleaning solution is then squeezed onto it. With one fingertip, it is gently rubbed. Finally, saline solution is poured over it to rinse it clear of any debris or residue.

Finally, it is important to understand how to properly store them. Saline solution must be used. Tap water has too much foreign matter and bacteria. Some such contaminants can even lead to bad infections and loss of sight. The storage case should be airtight. Each lens should be housed in an individual compartment. Cases can be found with the optometrist, pharmacist, or even in convenience stores. Right and left sides should be clearly marked, especially for those whose eyes require different prescriptions.

Improper care or usage can be dangerous. It doesn't have to be as long as the wearer knows how to take care of the contact lenses.
