Many families as well as individuals carry the burden of taking care of a beloved elderly relative. There comes a time when this heavy burden can feel overwhelming and people begin to consider other options such as rest homes and Maryland home care. Sometimes it's hard for a son or daughter to give the specialized care that their loved one needs.

There are caregivers that can come into your home who are highly qualified and experienced when it comes to serving those who suffer from Alzheimer's disease or dementia.

Alzheimer's patients need routines and structure. Even though they may seem unaware that they are going through a routine, in the long run it is really helpful to them. People who suffer from Alzheimer's feel more oriented in their lives when they have a set schedule with specific times for waking up, bathing, eating, having visitors, and going to bed. This consistency is very beneficial.

It may be hard for you to keep up a daily routine with your elderly relative because you have other responsibilities such as work or children. This is where having a caregiver come into the home can be a big help.

Most Alzheimer's patients don't like to be surprised by the unexpected so it is best to include cues in their daily routine that help them to know what's coming up next. These can be as simple as opening the curtains to show them that it's morning and time to get up or playing soothing music in the evening in order to get them ready for bed. Even if they don't seem like they notice or appreciate these cues, they are still making a difference.

It is also important to let your elderly relative continue to participate in as many day to day activities as possible. Having a few daily chores that they can handle like putting their clothes in the dirty laundry hamper is a healthy way for them to feel like they are still active participants in the world.

Of course this takes good judgment and supervision. Some activities are obviously more conducive to the situation than others and even a seemingly safe activity can quickly become dangerous so it is important that there is supervision. This is another area where it can be very convenient to have an in home care provider who's time is completely dedicated to the needs of your relative.

Everyone knows that taking care of the elderly is a lot of work, especially when Alzheimer's disease or dementia begin to come into play. They need constant care and that's a lot of responsibility for anybody. You don't need to feel guilty if this responsibility becomes overwhelming. Just find some one that you can trust to provide the kind of Maryland home care that you would want to give your self.
