Sometimes a plumbing drain pipe will develop a leak. The result can be the need to replace the drain pipe or it might just need to be repaired. If the leak is further down the line, you may require the services of a plumber. However, if it is just a small leak that you reach, you should be able to repair it yourself. It is important to fix a small leak right away so it does not develop into a more serious problem which will need the services of a professional plumber. If the leak is at the joint, you can often repair the problem by tightening the pipe. Below is a guide on repairing a leaky drain pipe:

1. Turn off the water valve at the pipe where there is the leak or turn off the water at the main valve.

2. Open the taps on the water line to reduce pressure. You will also want drain any water in the line.

3. Using a cloth, dry the area around the pipe. If there is any sediment, use sandpaper to clean it away.

4. The repair will not work if the pipe is wet and dirty. Dry off the area around the pipe with a clean cloth, and then rub it down with sandpaper to clean away any sediment.

5. At the area that is about an inch or two below the leak, tape up the pipe. The tape should be secure and tight, particularly directly over the area of the leak. As well, add several layers around and up and down over the leak. This will help efficient leak prevention and stability.

6. Turn on the water, open the faucet, and watch for leaks as the water flows.

The above instructions are a quick fix to repair a leaky pipe. Below are other options to fixing a leaky pipe:

Glue:

1. Thoroughly dry the area. Use sandpaper to remove and debris. Clean the area with alcohol to remove remaining debris so that the entire area is completely clean. Dry the clean area with a clean cloth.

2. Use special glue for water pipes that you have purchased from a plumbing supply store or hardware store. Apply a thick layer of the glue to the area and push it into the seam of where the leak is occurring.

Putty:

1. Clean, sand, and use alcohol on the area. Get some putty from a plumbing supply store or hardware store.

2. Mix the putty and apply as directed by the manufacturer. Let it sit and dry from the required amount of time to let the putty cure.

Fibreglass-Resin Tape

1. Purchase fibreglass-resin tape from a plumbing supply store or hardware store. Use the same cleaning and sanding procedures to clean the pipe area. Soak the fibreglass-resin tape in water as directed by the tape manufacturer.

2. Wrap the tape around the area of the leak. Smooth the taped area with your hands. Make sure you wear gloves. Leave the tape on to cure for the time indicated by the manufacturer.

It is important to fix a small leak right away because if left to leak, a pipe could burst causing mess and a more expensive repair bill. For a leak that is serious or you need extensive pipe repair, it is wise to call a professional plumber.
