Mechanisms for cellulite formation: The causes of cellulite deposition is not yet completely known but the following factors play a role in cellulite formation

Genetic factors

Hormonal factors especially the females hormones which may cause fluid retention

Lack of blood circulation through the lower limbs

Lack of lymph circulation in the lower limbs leading to gathering of toxic waste

Lack of physical activity

Improper eating habits like eating refined and processed foods

Women all over the world spend millions of dollars for the treatment of cellulite. This has also resulted in the sprouting up of newer therapeutic methods for cellulite reduction. The use of vacuum for getting rid of cellulite is one such newer modality of therapy.

How does vacuum work?

To understand how vacuum therapy works we must first understand how cellulite is formed. Cellulite is mainly an excess of fat deposited in the subcutaneous tissue. There are also some strands of elastic tissue that run downwards from the skin into the deeper layers of the muscle planes. The excess of fat deposited bulges out where as the connective tissue which is inelastic pulls the skin downwards. This typically forms the dimpled appearance of the cellulite. There is also excess of fluid accumulation in these areas due to inadequate lymphatic drainage. Al this leads to some amount of inflammatory reaction in the tissues.

The vacuum leads to creation of negative pressure. This negative pressure is applied onto the cellulite affected areas. The negative suction pressure created by the vacuum mobilizes the fatty tissue and causes loosening of the connective tissue strands there by reducing the dimpled appearance of the skin. Thus vacuum does not actually remove the fat in the cellulite affected areas but only makes the appearance smooth. The treatment to be taken consists of 8 sessions about twice a week for 30 minutes.

Another method of using the vacuum is called as Endemologie. This method uses a vacuum based suction massage. The advantage of this method is that in addition to the positive effects of vacuum, the massage therapy generates heat and causes some lysis of the fats, it also stretches the connective tissue vertically and improves the microcirculation within the skin capillaries.

How good is this method for cellulite reduction?

It must be noted that the method of vacuuming the cellulite affected areas will lead to only temporary change in the appearance of the affected part of the body. This is because there is very minimal destruction of the fat that actually causes the cellulite deposition. Hence when used alone, it may appear disappointing. This method should therefore be combined with efforts to make changes in diet, water intake, increasing physical activity by engaging in regular exercises. Cutting down on smoking, alcohol and caffeinated beverages also helps to control cellulite deposition.
