Your vet can also recommend other easy treatments and medicines that you may try if he is not available.
You should keep important contact information in your pets first aid kit. This should include the number of your regular vet, an emergency after hours veterinarian clinic and the number for a pet poison control center.
You should pack in basic supplies like cotton swabs or cotton balls and latex gloves. Other basic items are things like instant cold packs, bandages, gauze and tweezers or hemostats. Even the most docile animal may try to bite you in defense if it is hurt, so a muzzle might be a good idea too.

You should also keep an eye dropper or syringe without the needle to use to administer liquid medications. Other necessities are small scissors and ear wash and eye wash solutions.
You will need an antibacterial cleanser for cleaning small wounds. And some basic human medications that you can use for your pet. These include anti diarrhea liquid which will help with vomiting and stomach illnesses and if your pet has an allergic reaction you can give it a human antihistamine.
If your pet appears to be constipated you can treat that with mineral oil. You can also use activated charcoal or a human antacid to treat toxicity in animals. As with humans, dosage is very important. The drug ratio for your animal is very important so check with your vet to see what the correct amount is according to your pets weight.
