Floods can destroy home, property, and even families-recovering from them can be very hard emotionally, physically, and financially. The effects of water damage on a home can be quite devastating, particularly to your drywall.
It leaves incredibly ugly water stain marks, and allows dangerous mold to develop and grow all over the surfaces. Drywall molds are black molds that can wreck havoc upon your health and immune system.
It can cause your lungs to bleed, and respiratory illnesses to develop. Repairing all of the damage immediately is essential, before mold is allowed to grow and take over.
Once mold begins to grow and form, you will have to get rid of the materials completely and start over from scratch. This can be very costly, and difficult.
If it is not too late, inspect your property entirely, and all of your walls. If you are trying to spot water damage on your drywall, you can simply look for bulging, sagging, discoloration, and cracks in the surfaces.
These things indicate that damage has occurred, and that repairs need to be made. Keep in mind that water can easily drop and run along the interior pipes in your home.
Look on the ceilings, the flooring, and more for signs of pipe damage. Even if you isolate a leak in one area, you could find damage in another area completely due to dripping and running.
This is why you need to comb every area very carefully to find any problem areas. If you only find small cracks, the damages can be very easy to fix.
All you need to do is get a ready mixed spackling compound, and apply it on the crack with a putty knife. Talk to your local home improvement store about which compound will be the best for you to use.
You can also apply a strip of fiberglass mesh tape, which can strengthen the area where the putty can be applied. This is a good idea if the crack is a little larger than hairline.
If the crack is too big to seal in this way, you will probably need to do more structural work. Make sure that you remove all the materials from the area that have been tainted or affected in any way.
Cut the area of the drywall where the liquid soaked through. In fact, the drywall may already be crumbling and falling apart.
If not, you may need to use a jigsaw or a special handsaw to cut away the damaged parts that you can see. Always be on the lookout for molds and mildew-you may want to wear a mask to protect your lungs, so that you do not accidentally inhale anything.
If you find molds and mildew clinging to any areas, then this area cannot be saved and should be removed and thrown away immediately. Clean everything that the flood has touched, with strong cleanser.
After removing the damaged part, you must let the area dry completely before you start patching any holes. Use a high powered fan and a dehumidifier if possible to let air circulate and reduce the moisture content in the air.
Make sure that you let it sit for at least twelve hours. Make sure that any area you are working in is completely moisture free.
When the area is already completely dry, the next step is to replace the damaged part with a piece of drywall that is fitted, and which can blend into the area without being too visible. There are water resistant materials which can be purchased, to prevent any reoccurrences.
If you live in an area that floods frequently, this is the kind of material you should use in all cases. For larger holes, you will need a plywood backer board in order to have a place to fasten the replacement pieces.
Once the patch has become secured, make sure that you apply fiberglass tape. Place sealing mud on top, and make sure that it dries completely.
Be sure to save the joints until the area is completely flat and smooth, and ready to paint. If you need help, seek the advice of a professional.
You do not have to be devastated by the damage that can occur in the case of a flood. Simply take the steps necessary to ensure that your family stays safe from mold, before it has the chance to grow.
