Bugs often come home with travelers. Bed bugs in NYC, unfortunately, aren't that uncommon, and are difficult to get rid of. What are they? What do they look like, how do they spread, how do you get rid of them?

Bed bugs are small, oval, non-flying insects. They include three different species that bite people. An adult bed bug can reach 5-7 mm in length while the young are the hardest to find at 1.5 mm. The pest have flat bodies that are sometimes mistaken for ticks or even small cockroaches, they feed by sucking blood from animals or humans. Adults are reddish brown in color although they appear redder after feeding. They have wings, yet can't fly.

Bed bugs were common before World War II but became rare after rampant use of DDT during the 1940's and 50's. They are widespread in other countries, especially developing countries, but only recently have they been on the increase in the United States. Travelers to Third World countries carry the vermin home. Combine that with a decrease in stronger pesticides and we have made it easy for bugs to propagate.

Bugs are often associated with dirty conditions and, although this can be true, they also live quite happily in clean environments; all they need are humans or animals to feed on. They thrive in crowded living quarters like apartment buildings.

The tiny nuisances flourish in any tiny crack in furniture as well as textiles or upholstered furniture. They like to live in areas where people sleep and are concentrated in beds, mattresses, box springs, and bed frames. They don't live on the mattress but rather in cracks and crevices of the mattress and bed frames. They can habitate carpet, inside corners of dressers and cracks in wallpaper near beds. Unfortunately, they can live months without eating so they can even be found in homes that have long been vacant.

It is difficult to rid your house of bedbugs without professional help. You can try low odor sprays, dusts, and aerosol insecticides. Pest-control companies know the signs, living habits, breeding practices and areas where the bugs thrive. They are adept at ridding apartments and homes of these insidious pests. Bed bugs in NYC may have come from developing countries, but they are here to stay, watch for signs of them invading your home or apartment, and get rid of them as soon as possible.
