When most people come across the word plastic surgery, their minds shift to celebrities or men and women who try to alter their body parts for the purpose of beautification. Well, to a certain extent this might be true but a medical perspective makes us realize that this kind of operation serves special purposes in people's life. Just to highlight one of the benefits, persons with functional impairments can live a normal or functional life via the operation.

Most people cannot help but wonder how plastic surgery helps persons with functional impairments live normal lives. In essence, there are two main plastic surgery categories; cosmetic and reconstructive. Cosmetic or aesthetic procedures alter body parts that persons are never satisfied with. For instance, augmentation mammoplasty enlarges breasts, rhinoplasty reshapes noses and liposuction removes fat deposits from certain body parts.

Cosmetic procedures are mostly used persons who want to change their appearances and feel more comfortable with their bodies. These procedures boost a person's self esteem thus contributing to their psychological health. Even though most people tend to think that cosmetic procedures are surgical; involve stitching and cutting, they are not. Most are less evasive especially when it comes to procedures involving special lasers such as the removal of the unwanted hair and the sanding of skin such as in the case of improving severe scars.

The second major operation category involves reconstructive procedures mainly used to eradicate functional impairments that have been brought about by congenital abnormalities, traumatic injuries, diseases, infection and developmental abnormalities. Such impairments might include cleft lips, burns, clefts palates, tumors, facial bone breaks and fractures. Basically, reconstructive procedures improve body parts functions while at the same time give the patient a normal appearance.

In reconstructive procedures, tumors are removed, breasts reduced, new outer ears created in case the congenital ear is absent, scars repaired and surgery is performed on hands, legs or lips so as to improve their functionality. In actual sense, reconstructive procedures helps people function normally and this is why people consider it as a second chance in life or a way of giving back life to persons. For instance, for a woman who has breast cancer, the operation may get breast reconstruction to bring her life back to normal.

Surgeons might use several surgical procedures during the reconstruction procedures. The most common one is the microsurgery whereby a surgeon might remove muscle, skin, fat or bone from one body part and move it to the affected body part. The blood vessels are reconnected with the blood vessels at the affected site. This procedure is aimed at replacing missing tissues and is common during neck, breast and head reconstruction, brachial plexus surgery and hand replants.

Still, people can't help but wonder why people oppose plastic surgeries in spite of having considerable benefits. The society focus is on perfection, beauty and hence, most people seeking surgeries want physical perfection. As a result, an obsession for plastic surgeries has cropped up making it a dangerous ordeal. People end up seeking unnecessary and unhealthy continuous procedures which harm their bodies.

As we can see, plastic surgery, whether cosmetic or reconstructive has considerable benefits that can transform people's lives, allow them live comfortably and improve their well being. However, when used unnecessarily, subjectively and in unhealthy manner, it can have dangerous consequences. It is therefore important that one consults a qualified plastic surgery before deciding on whether to undergo the procedures involved.
