There are many reasons to make an appointment with Brooklyn urologists. Problems with the urinary tract or with the male reproductive system are a couple. Even issues with the female pelvic floor, may prompt a referral. This article will briefly discuss reasons someone may be referred to a urologist.

Urologists are surgeons, but most of their practice involves medical management of various afflictions. Some of these are prostate, testicular, and renal cancer, as well as kidney stones, perineal reconstruction, congenital genitourinary defects, and male infertility. Surgical procedures performed can range from bladder repair to kidney transplant.

Males should see a urologist if they are having infertility problems. The reason for this is because there is a slight chance that it could be caused by testicular cancer. Impotence is another reason to seek advice, it can be treated with a penile prostheses.

A man who has had an abnormal prostate exam, whether it is from nodules, irregularities and any firmness, should see a specialist to see if prostate cancer could be causing the abnormality. The cure rate is high if detected early. An elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test could indicate prostate cancer. Any change in the PSA level should be evaluated.

Testicular pain, firmness, or a mass should be investigated. Especially if the pain does not go away in a week or two. It could indicate testicular cancer, but if caught early can be cured.

Blood in the urine could be a sign that there is bladder or kidney cancer. Many suggest that even seeing blood one time in the urine is enough to require a visit to a urologist. Frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs) should be evaluated. Disorders such as obstructive uropathy or pyelonephritis may be found to be the cause. Urinary incontinence or an overactive bladder that occurs in both men and women also needs assessed.

If an x-ray reveals an abnormal kidney, make an appointment with the specialist because it could be caused from kidney cancer. Kidney stones also need to be handled with this specialist.

Sometimes children need to see a urologist. Reasons include undescended testicles, bladder exstrophy (when a child is born with the bladder outside the abdominal wall), hypospadias (the meatus, where the urine comes out, is not at the tip of the penis, but rather on the underside), epispadias (a birth defect of the bladder, urethra, and pelvic bones).

Urology does have subspecialties. Depending on the reason for the referral, the patient may be seen by a urologist who specializes in oncology, calculi, female urology, infertility, pediatrics, transplant, or neurology.

If someone has any of the symptoms or conditions listed above, they should see their Brooklyn urologists. They will do a complete and thorough examination to help solve any issues that may be present.
