The master cleanse is also called other names such as maple syrup diet, lemonade diet and lemon cleanse. However, they're all one and the same, aiming to detoxify the body. Yes, that's the main goal of this diet and not weight loss. Getting rid of excess pounds is just a bonus as the accumulated toxins within the body are flushed out.
This detoxification process was originally created in the 1940s by a natural health treatment proponent, Stanley Burroughs. In 2005, it was popularized once again by a raw food enthusiast, Peter Glickman, discussing it in his book and audio CD.
Especially in this day and age, undergoing detoxification is very important as everyone is highly susceptible to toxins in the environment. You can get them in the water you drink, the air that you breathe and the processed food that you eat. Smoking, drinking and other unhealthy ways of living also contribute to the accumulation of toxins inside the body.
There are many health issues linked to high toxicity levels in the body. To name a few: fatigue, joint pain, recurrent infection, weakened immune system, weight gain, bloating, bad breath and skin problems.
This is when the importance of this detoxification method steps into the scene. According to its proponents, it's very effective in ridding the body of toxins. Surprisingly, the things you need to perform such can be easily obtained at the grocery store. The real challenge, however, is sticking to it. Not to mention that one has to do the process for at least 10 straight days.
Some of the key ingredients you need for creating the juice you have to take are lemon juice and maple syrup. The lemon juice should be freshly squeezed from organic lemons, and not something that comes in a bottle or box. The maple syrup should be grade B, something that's darker and contains more nutrients that grade A. You also need powdered cayenne pepper and distilled or purified water.
Take note that there's no other recipe around but the one recommended by its proponents. For every 8 ounces of water, mix 2 tablespoons lemon juice, 2 tablespoons maple syrup and about 1/10th of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper. You can make it by the glass or, by adjusting the recipe accordingly, by the pitcher to help save time and energy. Simply stash the rest in the refrigerator afterwards.
You can take as many servings of the juice in a day. You may also drink as many water as you can because it can help keep hunger pangs at bay. Note that you're not allowed to take anything else for 10 straight days while undergoing the detoxification process.
Every morning, sea salt water flush should be performed. You do this by mixing a teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt to 25 to 35 ounces of warm water. Mix well and drink a glass each time. Before going to bed, drink a cup of herbal laxative tea.
After the 10 days is over, there's a proper way of getting off the master cleanse. On the first day, you should only take freshly squeezed lemon juice. On the second day, have an orange or grapefruit for lunch and vegetable soup for dinner. On the third day, you may take vegetable soup for both lunch and dinner. You're set to have solid foods on the following day.
