A dentist is someone that is trained to help a patient prevent disease that affects the teeth, the mouth and gums. In order to get you Doctor of dental Surgery, eight years or more are required in college and dental studies.
They will also have to pass additional test that will be given to them afterward. To get started you will have to pay attention to certain high school courses in biology, math, physics and general health. During these years it is a very good idea to maintain a high grade point average.
The next thing you can do considering you are still in high school is talk to your guidance counselor and ask for information dealing with colleges that have two year pre-dental programs. Make sure that these programs will also place emphasis in the sciences.
More than likely most pre-dental students will have to get a bachelor's degree. As a future graduating student an important step will be to send for college catalogs and school applications. These will need to be completed well ahead of the deadline in order for you to receive the results that you want. The next thing you will do is get in contact with the American Dental Association which will provide you with a list of all the four year dental schools.
The majority of these schools will have an approved accreditation by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Review the rules and regulations carefully and make sure that you actually met their admission requirements. After this you will need to take the Dental Admissions Test.
It is very important that you make sure that you continue to achieve as much academic excellence as possible. All of the test scores, your overall grade point average, and your recommendations will play a very important role when a school is trying to accept you.

Your final years will be all of your clinical work under the supervision of certified dentists. You can obtain you very own license by completing and passing all of the remaining and practical state exams after you have completed dental school. As with most licenses, different states may have different rules so make sure you are aware of all of your state's regulations regarding certification.
There is also the option of checking with your state for areas of specialty licenses. Many of these will require an additional two of five year of dedicated dental studies. Having a job as a dentist will require you to have great skills in communication and good manual dexterity. You will also need to have very good interpersonal skills as well. Many dentists have as many as 7 to 10 hours a day on a normal work schedule and this does not include emergencies. You must be prepared to be available as need in this line of work.
