Award winning smiles take more than cosmetic dentist in NYC, they also require proper dental hygiene. The basics include brushing and flossing. Everyone knows these are the ingredients for a healthy mouth and a flashing smile, but does everyone know the proper way to brush and floss?

Brushing begins with fluoride and a soft bristle toothbrush. Soft bristles are better than hard brushes as vigorous brushing can cause the gums to recede. The best toothbrushes are battery-operated or electric. They get the teeth cleaner than the traditional manual style. If you have arthritis or other problems brushing, electric brushes are the best option. Find a toothbrush that fits comfortably in your mouth. Children and babies should use smaller brushes.

Teeth should be brushed a minimum of twice a day. Don't rush when you brush. Consider setting an egg timer for children for two minutes. Take time to do a thorough job.

Hold your toothbrush at a slight angle. Use soft pressure against your teeth and brush back and forth with short strokes. Brushing the insides of your teeth and the top chewing surfaces are as important as brushing your tongue. Tongue cleaners are highly effective in maintaining fresh breath.

Always rinse your toothbrush after brushing. Put your brush in the dishwasher weekly to sterilize it. Never store your toothbrush with a cover, as bacteria will grow. Let the brush air dry completely and store in an upright position away from the toilet if possible. Invest in a new brush or new head periodically when the bristles become frayed. Every three to four months is a good idea.

Floss before brushing! The dollar stores sell flossers on little plastic sticks; these are especially easy to use, even for children. If you have traditional floss, break off about 18 inches and wind the floss around your middle finger on one hand and rest against the middle finger of the other. Leave about one inch to floss. One tooth at a time does the job, rubbing against all sides of that tooth. Unwind floss as you progress.

Cosmetic dentist in NYC can enhance that beautiful smile with whiteners, veneers, straighteners and other tricks, but you have to have great oral hygiene before you begin. Teeth covered with plague and cavities aren't going to be stunning even if they are white! It is a simple process involving only floss and a brush, everyone knows it, but now you know how.
