Those who practice any type of exercise activity know the health benefits derived from training and hard work. With the practice of any sport however, there is the possibility of an injury. Prevention is the key. Sports medicine is designed to prevent and treat activity related injuries. Most of these type accidents can be treated and managed by a sports medicine specialist.

There are two types of injuries to be aware of when practicing a sport. The first is the traumatic and the second is the chronic. Traumatic injuries might include those such as sprains, strains and fractures. Chronic may include tendonitis and tiny stress fractures.

To avoid injury in the first place, keep some of these very important prevention tips and practices in mind. Equipment is very important. Use a good helmet for those sports that require one. Eye protection is of utmost importance in many activities. Goggles and prescription goggles will help many athletes. These should fit securely as well. Mouth guards are important to those practicing contact type sports. Pads can be essential. Elbow, wrist and knee guards are useful also. The right footwear can prevent tripping and falling accidents. Replace shoes that are worn out and no longer offer the type of support needed.

Remember to warm up. Muscles not warmed up and properly stretched tend to sustain an injury very quickly. Start with some easy walking or jogging to get the muscles going. Follow this with a good stretching exercise for those muscles in particular that receive the most wear and tear.

Do not let dehydration become a problem. Dehydration happens when the amount of water in the body has dropped well below the normal level for functioning properly. Through sweating, large amounts of fluids can be lost. Dieting or taking certain supplements can decrease the amounts of water in the body. Losing large amounts of water can make a person sick. Drink lots of fluids before beginning the routine. Be sure to drink throughout this routine as well.

These tips will help go along way in staying safe while practicing certain recreational activities. Practiced all these things and still sustained an injury despite safety precautions? Consider a visit to a sports medical specialist. If in the Daytona Beach area, visit a Daytona Beach sports medicine specialist to find the best treatment options available for relief. Prevention and treatment is their primary goals for helping people.
