The experimentation on laser hair removal was done about 20 years ago before it has become commercially available during the mid 90's. In 1998, a group of experts from Massachusetts General Hospital published some articles that primarily described this procedure. Today, this method is generally accepted and widely practiced in the dermatology field, clinics, even within private homes. There are devices especially designed for home remedy or consumer self-treatment. Hence, dermatology literature, articles, including testimonials can prove the efficacy and safety of this process.

Men and women equally suffer from unsightly hair, balding or thinning, and other related conditions. These problems occur due to different reasons like lack of nutrients, genetics, ageing process, and others. Whatever the cause may be, most people become uncomfortable regarding their physical appearances. For that reason, they tend to shave or wax, but consistently doing these could become frustrating and irritating at some point.

Fortunately, the abovementioned procedure offers more permanent treatment to certain scalp or skin conditions. Through a specialized laser, unwanted hairs are removed when skin is penetrated by light energy. Basically, light energy is converted into heat while it penetrates the skin, causing thermal injury towards the follicle. When high temperature is able to penetrate the skin, it disables the follicle to effectively inhibit re-growth.

However, said process is highly effective and should be accomplished throughout the growth stage. Since hair grows in specific cycles, every follicle undergoes certain stage individually. Thus, not all follicles grow together simultaneously. Moreover, this surgical procedure entails minimal pain, though some instances require numbing cream or topical anesthesia. Total surgery period depends on the size or area being treated, but most cases take as short as 10 minutes.

After surgery, treated area may possibly appear swollen or slightly red. But, this could be remedied by simply applying appropriate ointment or cream. A patient can resume to normal activities immediately, however excessive sun exposure must be prevented. Waxing or bleaching should also be avoided, while shaving is accepted but not recommended during the first couple of weeks.

Though most cases are safe and effective, several complications may occur in some instances. These complications include blistering, scarring, burning, or changes in pigmentation, but almost all of these side effects are temporary and heals in due time. With these, most surgeons and dermatologists would prescribe specific products to cure such complications, making recovery process easier and faster.

Candidates for such surgery should have darker mane than their skin. The best individuals are fair-skinned with black or brown mane. Those with red, gray, or blonde do not properly respond well towards similar procedure. Furthermore, patients typically undergo several sessions, depending on the area or size to be treated, surgeon fee, and other factors.

Apparently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) grants or approves the technology to be used throughout the process of laser hair removal. Although there are different lasers used, every certified device has a design to permanently inhibit hair growth, and not permanently remove it. Nevertheless, hair on any body part can definitely re-grow, especially when not treated with appropriate technology and not remedied during the proper stage.
