Staying in an unhappy marriage can become unbearable for some people. These people may not hesitate to seek marriage counselling to find solutions to their unhappiness. However, there are also some couples who may feel uncomfortable going for professional marital advise. They are either embarrassed to talk to a total stranger or may also feel that they do not need any help at all.

Couples who have been married for years may find it difficult to leave the relationship, even though it is no longer working. Divorce may seem like an easy way out, but this is not usually the case. Some are willing to work on their relationships despite the daily challenges they face.

Marriage can be quite a task and couples have to work really hard to keep the relationship exciting in order for it to last. However, making it work takes special skills that some people are not equipped with. Communication, for instance, is an important skill that can make or break a relationship. If you or your spouse is unable to communicate your feelings or your expectations from each other, then this may be the root of all your problems.

Marriage counselling can help break down those barriers in communication between spouses. A trained professional who is willing to listen to both sides can help resolve issues in a considerate manner. The counsellor can assist the couple in processing their problems and in coming up with solutions that work.

Consider going to a professional for marital advise if you are not contented with your marriage. If possible, bring your spouse along and have the sessions together. If your spouse finds this unnecessary or hesitates to go for professional marital intervention, then respect that and go by yourself. Give him or her the time to willingly come. Do not put pressure as this will only cause him or her to resist the idea.

Going on your own for counselling can still help you understand yourself better. The sessions may help you realize what your role is in the problems you are encountering in your relationship. By following the counsellor's advise, your whole attitude towards the issues may change, and your spouse may be encouraged to go with you the next time.

Counselling can also help you analyze your own emotional baggage that you may not have let go in the past. These unresolved issues may be holding you back from trusting your spouse or from openly expressing your thoughts and emotions. By talking to a trained professional, you may be able to find answers, not just on questions related to your relationship, but also to life, in general.

To find the right counselor, go with referrals from friends or family members. Keep in mind that even with the best adviser, you and your spouse alone can take steps to make your relationship work. If you decide that the relationship can still be saved, convince your spouse to go with you for marriage counselling. Doing so, you both may realize what areas in your relationship need some improvement in order to make it succeed.
