Even though divorce may be an option, it is usually the last recourse for most couples. Most married couples are willing to give their relationships the best shot. However, all relationships face challenges and there are times when things do not turn out the way we plan them to.

It is true that keeping a relationship alive and exciting can be quite a challenge, especially after children are born and financial responsibilities start to set in. There are important skills that are required for a healthy relationship, and some of these skills have to be honed on a daily basis. One important skill is how to communicate your thoughts and feelings to your spouse and how to listen to what your spouse is trying to tell you.

If communication becomes a difficult task, then this is where marriage counselling can help. Having an objective person who is trained in resolving marital issues can help a couple discuss their problems in the relationship without hurting each other. A counsellor can assist the couple in processing issues in an objective manner. He or she can also lead the couple to come up with solutions that can work for both parties.

If you are unhappy about the state of your marital relationship, it may be time for you to seek marital advise. Ideally, you should have your spouse come with you for counselling, although some people may find that this is not easily done. Some wives or husbands hesitate to go to a trained professional, for fear of disclosing their thoughts to a total stranger.

If your spouse is hesitant to join you, then start going by yourself. Going for sessions on your own can still help you understand your role in the marital problem and explore your options. Your spouse may be encouraged to join you on future sessions if he or she sees the changes in you.

By going through counselling alone, you may also be able to sort some of the emotional baggage that you may have not resolved in the past. A good counsellor can help you understand your strengths and weaknesses and how these play into your relationships. You may find the answers you are looking for not just on how to improve your marriage, but generally, on how to be happy.

Finding the right counsellor is important. Ask your friends or family members for referrals and check credentials before you make an appointment. Remember that even after marriage counselling, you alone can make the decision on whether your marriage is still worth saving or the time has come to give it up. If you finally decide that the relationship is worth keeping, persuade your spouse to go through counselling so that you can both find solutions to your marital problems.
