Today, there are a number of different types of contact lenses available that are designed to improve vision for people with certain types of eye conditions. Astigmatism is one eye condition many people suffer from, and in the past, people with astigmatism were told they could wear soft contacts. Fortunately, thanks to developments in science, people with astigmatism can now wear special ones which will help them see clearly.

What are Toric Contact Lenses?

Toric contact lenses are made from the same materials as spherical contacts which enable them to be ether RGP or soft. However, what makes them different is how they are designed. For instance, Toric lenses contain two powers which have been made with curvatures at different angles. One angle is for astigmatism, and the angle is for hyperopia or myopia. When the wearer blinks, the contacts have a mechanism that keeps the lens in position, resulting in clear vision.

Astigmatism and Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Contact Lenses

RGP contacts are able to keep their shape when they are resting on the cornea. They also provide sharp vision when worn by people with astigmatism. They provide a high degree of clarity. However, many people choose soft Toric lenses as they more comfortable when they are first worn. RGP takes a getting used to so it requires some patience.

Disposable, Color, and Multifocal Toric Lenses

Toric contacts are available in different types such as disposable, frequent replacement, color, and multifocals. You can choose from a variety of colors to enhance your eye color. You may also be able to get disposables but it will depend on your prescription. However, you can still get non-disposable Toric lenses. Multifocal Torics are available for people who have presbyopia and astigmatism. These are usually non-disposable as well.

Astigmatism and Silicone Hydrogel Toric Lenses

There are a number of Toric silicone hydrogel contacts on the market. You can even get monthly ones. They allow much more oxygen to pass through to the cornea which is healthy for the eye. Silicone hydrogel lenses offer the following benefits: more resistance to protein deposits, reduced risk of eye infections, easier to handle, and there is less drying.

Cost

For such special contact lenses like Torics, it would seem like these would be very expensive, however, consumers can get them quite cheaply. Once you have been fitted by your optician and have received a prescription, you can go online and shop at a professional and reputable online retailer. You will find lenses being offered at greatly discounted prices and they are much cheaper than traditional retailers. Thanks to technological innovations, many people with astigmatism can get Toric lenses at discounted prices.
