People always think that they will never be put into a life or death situation at some point during their lives. Sadly, this is not the case.
Accidents happen all the time, every second of every day. On a daily basis, there are children, women, and men that need the use of CPR in emergency situations in order to survive. Wouldn't it give you peace of mind to know that if something DID happen, you would know exactly what to do?
Imagine how many lives could be saved if everyone was CPR certified. Approximately 17,5000 children die every year from drowning accidents. What if there was someone nearby that could have saved them? Unfortunately, there isn't any agency that tracks how many lives are saved by the use of CPR but if you are in an emergency situation and there is someone helping you that is certified by CPR, I can guarantee that the survival odds are in your favor.
By following these simple steps- also known as the ABC's of CPR, you could save someone's life. You could be a hero.
1. Airway: Check to make sure the person is breathing. If no oxygen is getting to the brain, there will be permanent brain damage in as little as 4 minutes and death soon after that. Make sure the person is lying flat on their back and tilt the head back so the airway is open. If you determine the person is not breathing even after opening the airway, continue on to rescue breathing.
2. Breathing: While keeping the person's head tilted back, pinch the nose with your thumb and forefinger so completely close off the nasal passageway. Inhale normally and administer two full breaths immediately while being sure to keep a tight seal around the mouth so as to not let the air escape. When breathing into their mouth, be sure to watch for the chest to rise. If it does not, there is something blocking the passageway to the lungs which needs to be removed in order for CPR to be successful.
3. Circulation: Next it is time for chest compressions. Kneel at the side of the victim and place the heel of your hand on their sternum with your other hand on top of it. For some, it is easiest if you interlock your fingers so you don't press on the chest wall. Press directly downward while keeping your arms straight. Press hard and fast as you give 30 compressions to every two breaths. Continue until advanced life support arrives.
