Women with vaginal discharge, itching, or odor will want to consult a gynecologist, not only to treat these symptoms, but to make sure there isn't another underlying problem that could be worse. These doctors can diagnose and treat women's health issues. If any of these symptoms occur, it is important to see Elizabeth City gynecologists. Following is a review of some of the more common vaginal infections: yeast, trichomoniasis, and bacterial.
Yeast Infections
Yeast infections are caused by a fungus call Candida that thrives in the moist, dark area of the vagina. It is normally found in the vagina and on the skin and causes no problems. But sometimes it grows out of control and causes an infection. Symptoms of this overgrowth are a thick, white discharge that looks like cottage cheese. The outer vaginal area may itch, burn, and swell. Common causes are antibiotics, diabetes, birth control pills and pregnancy.
Effective medication for treatment can be bought over-the-counter. Good results are typically seen with products like miconazole or clotrimazole vaginal creams. A prescription may be needed if the infection does not go away.
Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
Like yeast that normally inhabits the vagina, there are bacteria that are normally present as well. These bacteria are both good and bad. Normally, the good bacteria outnumber the bad bacteria (Gardnerella, Mycoplasma, and Mobiluncus) and there is no problem. However, when the bad bacteria outnumber the good, bacterial vaginosis develops. Symptoms include a thin white or grayish discharge with a fishy or ammonia-like odor. Sometimes there is itching around the outside of the vagina, and possible burning during urination. Causes can include douching or having sex with new or multiple partners, however this is not considered a sexually transmitted disease (STD).
A prescription of metronidazole or clindamycin pills or cream will effectively treat bacterial vaginosis. An alternative treatment for both bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections is to insert a small amount of plain, unpasteurized yogurt containing lactobacillus acidophilus at bedtime. Even eating yogurt can prove helpful.
Trichomoniasis
The condition known as trichomoniasis, is caused by a parasite. Symptoms include a green or frothy yellow discharge, irritation, burning, and foul odor. This is a sexually transmitted disease. Sometimes people are infected and show no symptoms.
Metronidazole pills can take care of trichomoniasis. Sexual partners will also need treated even if they have no symptoms. Avoid genital contact until the infection has cleared, otherwise partners may re-infect each other.
Patients should discuss their symptoms with a doctor so that problems can be accurately diagnosed and treated.
