Some laymen interchange the title "psychiatrist" with that of "psychologist," "counselor" or "therapist." However, psychiatrists are licensed medical doctors; therefore, they are the only people in the mental-health field who can prescribe medicinal therapies or prescriptions. In some practices, psychiatrists work with therapists, who give counseling, in order to provide total patient care.

There are many clinical settings where Saint Louis psychiatrists work. Some of them work in mental institutions or hospitals. Others have their own practice or consult with several practices. Pharmaceutical research facilities and investigative organizations also employ mental-health physicians for their expertise.

Criminal psychiatry is a specialization of this area of medicine. This type of medical doctor examines the mental fitness of those standing trial for committing a crime. Private psychiatrists may also be hired to testify for the prosecution or defense, helping to build either party's case. Also, during a criminal investigation, these physicians will help the police create a psychological profile as a way to narrow the list of suspects.

One of the main tasks of a therapeutic psychiatrist is to diagnose mental illnesses and prescribe the appropriate treatments. These doctors will also spend time monitoring their patient's progress. Some medications carry certain risks of harmful side effects, so the doctor may also need to tweak dosages or change medications until the patient is stabilized.

Patients who are under the care of talk therapists and mental physicians will benefit the most if both professionals clearly communicate with one another. Often, patients are required to sign medical release forms that allow both clinicians to work together and discuss the case. A lot of common mental illnesses are treated by a combination of medication, talk therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy.

It can be problematic when both professionals come to different conclusions regarding treatment. It is recommended that patients ask their psychiatrist for the name of a therapist with whom the doctor works closely. A lot of therapy practices have both therapists and mental physicians, which makes inter-clinical communications much easier.

Psychiatric offices employ doctors who may take one of many different approaches in regards to treating illnesses through talk therapy. Psychiatrists may be of the Freudian, Jungian, humanist, behaviorist or Gesalt schools of thought. Experts strongly encourage patients to ask their clinical doctor about their particular approach to therapy before treatment sessions begin. Doing so gives the patient the opportunity to find out whether or not the psychiatrist's philosophies are compatible with the patient's beliefs.
