A rhinoplasty is the official term given to what is commonly known as a nose job. It is a procedure that falls under the plastic surgery umbrella, dealing with the reconstruction of the nose for either cosmetic and aesthetic purposes, or for respiratory purposes.

If the nasal passage is damaged, the nose is broken or breathing is difficult - possibly due to a deviated septum or nostril collapse - these are all reasons for a rhinoplasty based on purely medical purposes, which will most likely be reimbursed by insurance companies. Many patients who have to undergo this type of surgery often decide to go ahead and alter the nose to be more aesthetically pleasing at the same time.

People who decide to have a nose job done for aesthetic purposes alone choose to do so for a number of reasons. The end result is often a means of raising one's self-esteem and confidence levels as they feel more comfortable in their skin.

They may wish to balance the face and make it more symmetrical, which has long been a method of determining beauty. They may want to straighten a crooked nose by having the bump filed down for a more visually pleasing profile, or they may wish to have their nose appear narrower from the front by reducing the bridge or even the nostrils.

Changing the shape of the nose even in the slightest way can dramatically alter the way a person looks. A good job is done when the face overall looks balanced but still natural, and when the actual changes made to this feature are not overly drastic.

Following a consultation with the plastic surgeon, an appointment is made to have the procedure done. If the patient qualifies for a closed rhinoplasty, they will come out of surgery with no visible scarring as all incisions would have been made inside the nose, as opposed to an open rhinoplasty, the more suitable option for noses that require a great deal of work.

Recovery time from this type of surgery can be as much as a year, but the bruising will disappear by about three weeks post-surgery and the swelling will go down completely within six months. There are measures that can be taken by the patient to minimize the recovery time, such as staying hydrated and making certain diet changes. Resting as much as possible is understandably mandatory to aid the healing process. It is also important to protect the nose from all forms of agitation, especially physical disturbances.

Though there is no such thing as the 'perfect' nose, patients will often visit their plastic surgeons with images of what they would like to end up with. These images are often of popular celebrities. It is important to note that what works for one face may not necessarily be ideal for another. It is also important to listen to the opinion of the plastic surgeon, who is able to better recognize what will and won't work for the individual.
