Medical scrubs are the trousers, shirts and gowns that the medical personnel wear in surgery. The word comes from scrubbing in or preparing for surgery which includes scrubbing hands with disinfecting soap and water. The design of the uniform is plain and basic so that there is less dirt to hide in the folds of the fabric.

In the 1940s operating room gowns were white to emphasize hygiene. By the 1950s the consensus was that the white lights reflecting off of the white gowns were causing eye strain so shades of green were adopted. Blood was also less pronounced on the green background. In the 1970s the short-sleeved V-neck shirt and drawstring trousers became standard operating room attire and their popularity has continued to grow.

This casual uniform gradually got adopted by personnel on the wards of hospitals, in doctor's offices, dental offices and veterinary clinics. Most staff including janitors working in the medical environment would also be wearing scrubs. In surgery the accepted shades are light green, light blue or a combination of green and blue. Scrubs that are not used in surgery come in an assortment of colors, prints and patterns. This popular trend is starting to catch on in Europe.

The basic no-nonsense design of scrubs has made them very comfortable and popular as casual wear. Hospitals have experienced so much theft that some have switched their green colors to pink to discourage personnel from stealing them. Typically it is not the hospital that owns them but a leasing company rents them out to the hospital facility. People have found them relaxing to wear as workout clothing, pajamas and casual wear.

Fashion scrubs can be purchased online and one of the most popular models are those based on a well known TV show. These uniforms are a blend of poly rayon resulting in an ultra soft fabric that is stain resistant. They have a more tailored look than the standard loose fitting tops and drawstring pants.

The design of the tops replaces the plain V-neck with offset pinches and pleats of fabric to produce stylish accents around the collar. Punctuations of fashion that are not expected in a hospital setting are suddenly proving to be just what the medical personnel want to wear.

Personnel working in a veterinary clinic create a cheerful mood with uniforms sporting cute animal prints of cats, dogs, paw prints and other pet-themed images. Dentists' scrub-wear has cheerful logo patches sewn onto the shirts depicting humorous caricatures and cartoons. These images create a less intimidating environment for adults and children to experience.

Medical scrubs have evolved greatly since the early part of the twentieth century. Hygiene, practicality and aesthetics have all been important contributors to make the wearer more at ease as well as the patient. Their simplicity of cut offers less hiding places for bacteria to find refuge. Scrub-wear enhances the comfort level for the wearer while cheering up the patient and helping them to feel less anxious about their medical treatment.
