The Importance of Dental Hygiene

Many people do not know that maintaining dental hygiene is an important part of maintaining their overall health. When you do not practice proper dental hygiene, you are at risk of such problems as oral infections, tooth loss, oral pain, gingivitis which is a type of gum disease that causes inflammation of the gums, and periodontal disease. Practicing dental hygiene is an important part of maintain a healthy life and it helps promote optimum social, motional, and mental well being.

With periodontal disease, the gums will pull away from the teeth and create pockets that become infected. The body's immune system combats the bacteria and the plaque grows below the gums which eventually end up in the blood stream. Bacterial toxins and the body's immune begin to weaken as a result of the infection and the bone and tissue that hold the teeth in place begin to deteriorate. If not treated, the gums, bones, and tissue that support the teeth are eventually ruined. The teeth may eventually become loose, fall out or have to be removed. Such diseases like periodontal disease can affect your overall physical health.

Maintaining proper hygiene involves taking care of your overall oral health and the associated tissues and structures. The purpose of dental hygiene is to maintain overall optimum oral health which makes a positive contribution to one's overall physical health and well being. It also helps a person to speak and eat properly, making sure he or she will not be embarrassed about smiling, as well making sure there is no pain and discomfort. Practicing good dental hygiene contributes to one's enjoyment of life.

Practicing a daily brushing and flossing program is essential to maintaining good dental hygiene. However, it is just as important to visit a dentist regularly. A dentist has the training, experience, tools, skills, and expertise to detect and treat various dental conditions. As well, a dentist can address health issues pertaining to your oral health. The cleaning procedures are designed to clean out areas that are not normally affected by just brushing alone. They can clean and scale teeth, take x-rays to determine if there are problems not visible to the naked eye, and they can repair problems before they get worse such as filling cavities.

If you are missing one or more of your teeth, a dentist can replace them using such procedures as dental implants, dentures, bridges, and crowns. Only a dentist can identify and repair problems with the teeth. If you have not been to the dentist in quite a while or you are having a problem with your teeth, visit a dentist to ensure that you are taking the appropriate steps to maintaining a healthy teeth and oral tissues. A dentist works closely with the dental hygienist and other dental team members to keep you and your mouth healthy. A healthy mouth that is free of oral diseases and problem teeth is important for a healthy body. Maintaining good dental hygiene is important for you and your family.
