A urologist is a medical doctor who specializes in the study of the male reproductive system and the urinary tract of both men and women. The urinary tract and the reproductive system are closely related to one another and include a number of different organs. Chesapeake urologists have knowledge of the adrenal glands, kidneys, bladder, urethra, penis, prostrate and testicles and know how to treat disorders found within these areas. Because the urological area is so complex, the science has been divided into several fields of specialty.

Andrology is specifically the study of the male reproductive system. One of the most common situations experienced by men as they grow older is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is better understood as an enlarged prostrate. Other problems relating to andrology include impotence and infertility.

Urogynecology specializes in female urology. Often childbirth or heavy lifting can cause damage to the pelvic floor which results in prolapse or incontinence. Other ailments women might have include difficulty emptying the bladder and/or elimination.

Children cannot be overlooked when it comes to this subject. There is also a specialized field for them, which is called pediatric urology. General disorders include undescended testicles, bladder control issues and an anomaly called vesicoureteral reflux, which is the movement of urine backing up into the kidneys. Children can also have some of the same urological maladies that adults have.

Many people don't realize that the nervous system can actually have an effect on the lower urinary tract. The branch of urology associated with that specific area is called neurourology. Neurogenic bladder, which is characterized by lack of bladder control, can be caused by multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, herniated discs and other conditions.

Every year thousands of people are diagnosed with bladder, prostrate or kidney cancer. Urologic oncology is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of all cancers related to the urological system. Prostrate cancer is the most common cancer found in men and is particularly dangerous because it usually has no warning signs at the onset.

Finally, renal transplantation is the field dealing with the kidneys. A kidney transplant can often be necessary for someone who has chronic or end-stage renal disease. People who have kidney stones and fail to get treatment can be more likely to develop kidney disease.

Indications of problems relating to urological disorders include an overactive bladder, enlarged prostrate, pain possibly associated with kidney stones and chronic urinary tract infections. Although some of these issues may not seem serious, they can be the sign of a far worse illness and should not be ignored. For those who are experiencing any of these symptoms Chesapeake urologists can help. Many urological sicknesses are easily diagnosed, and if caught early can be treated successfully.
