How Do I Avoid My Eczema Triggers?

Several months ago, I started noticing that my husband's eyelids were growing inflamed, with small flakes forming from the skin and getting tangled in his eyelashes. At first, I attributed it to dry skin, but it continued on and on, even after the application of special lotion. After he had a conversation with his doctor, my spouse explained that it was eczema.

Now, I had heard of eczema, but I didn't know anything about it--nor had I heard of eczema triggers. So I did some research which might help you cope with your skin condition. In very basic terms, eczema is a type of inflammation of the outer layer of skin, called the epidermis.

Its symptoms are varied; each person experiences it a little bit differently, and it has a wide range of seriousness. My husband's case, fortunately, is very mild. But if you are having trouble with persistent and/or recurrent swelling, redness, itchiness, dryness, flaking, crusting, cracking, oozing, or bleeding, you could have inflammation of the skin usually categorized as eczema.

Be sure there isn't another explanation, however. For example, during the winter, I inevitably get extremely dry skin, which causes my knuckles to crack and bleed if I don't switch to a more intensely moisturizing lotion quickly enough. Plus, some fungi or insect bites might imitate the symptoms of eczema.

If there is no clear explanation for your suffering, however, it is probably time to talk to your doctor or dermatologist. This dermatological condition can come and go but tends to appear on a specific body part (as indicated by its appearance specifically on my husband's eyelids) and is often hereditary, so don't ignore it just because it seems to go away.

Unfortunately, eczema is currently incurable. Medical approaches typically try to control its manifestations by reducing swelling and itching. As you live with this condition, you will learn to spot your personal eczema triggers and to reduce them in your daily life.
For example, many people tend to flare up when they're stressed; others might find that irritants in their detergent irritate the condition, so it's always a good idea to switch to hypoallergenic detergent. Switch to "green" household cleaners, too, as I've known several sufferers that become aggravated by traditional chemicals.

Your doctor or dermatologist should be able to recommend some measures that will reduce or prevent itching during an eczema flare-up, but regardless, try to avoid scratching the skin, as you can do serious damage to your skin.

You can manage your eczema, but remember that knowledge is power. Whenever you have any questions, do the research and talk to your doctor. You don't have to "just deal with it."
