Neurology is the study of the nervous system within the brain, nerves, and spinal cord. Neurologists can diagnose and treat many disorders using neurological exams which may include testing of nerves in the head and neck, memory, speech, balance and reflexes, and many other cognitive abilities. Abnormalities in the nervous system can lead to complications such as pain, seizures, poor coordination, muscle weakness, and paralysis if left untreated.

Brain damage is one of the most major neurological disorders that are treated by Cincinnati neurologists. When damage has occurred to the cerebral lobe, it can affect different areas of cognitive thinking. For instance, damage done to the frontal lobe may affect the ability to plan, analyze, and the individual may develop trouble with speech. Damage to the occipital lobe may affect sight and individuals with lesions may experience hallucinations. Individuals with parietal lobe damage may experience problems with spacing and coordination while those with damage to the temporal lobe may experience problems with sense and smell and may also find it hard to process stimuli such as particular scenes or faces.

Other neurological brain dysfunctions that can be treated may include:

- Amnesia
- Headaches
- Cranial nerve disorders
- Tumors within the nervous system
- Infections in the spinal cord or brain
- Movement disorders
- Epilepsy
- Strokes
- Sleep disorders
- Movement disorders
- Multiple sclerosis

Mental retardation, learning disabilities, and mental disorders have generally not been classified as neurological; however, it can be argued that these conditions may be related primarily to the brain.

Another common type of neurological disorder is carpal tunnel syndrome. It is a progressive condition that affects a key nerve within the wrist. People who work in assembly lines or those who work with repeated motions throughout the day are more likely to develop carpal tunnel syndrome. Neurologists may run several tests in the nerves to determine the severity and develop a treatment program. In most cases, carpal tunnel syndrome does not require surgery and can be relieved by wearing splints to relieve repetitive movements on the affected nerve and anti-inflammatory medications to help relieve pain.

Many neurological disorders develop as an individual gets older. Helpful tips to boost memory and reduce the chances of developing these include staying as organized as possible with help from calendars, daily planners, and address books. In addition, focus on all senses when something new is learned and try to teach the brain different ways of absorbing new information such as saying it out loud or drawing a picture of it.
